HOOPS: Shalom sweeps opening doubleheader

Girls basketball

Shalom Christian 43, Faith Christian 31 >> Shalom Christian didn’t get off to such a great start, but it finished well and earned a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory over Faith Christian to start the season.

The Flames (1-0, 1-0 MDCC) managed only 17 points in the first half, but tallied 26 in the latter half.

“It was a very good team that we played tonight, and I was very pleased with how we spread our offense around,” Shalom coach Brad Eby said. “We had a lot of players finish with eight or nine points, so that was good to see. We also had a very strong defensive effort tonight.”

Brooke Kuhns finished as the team’s leader with nine points and five rebounds. Lydia Harris, Brooke Emge and Paige Hoover all contributed eight points.

Boys basketball

Shalom Christian 64, Faith Christian 58 >> Jonah Stains kicked off his junior season in a big way Tuesday with a 35-point night in Shalom Christian’s first game of the season, a win over Faith Christian in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference matchup.

But unbelievably enough, Stains was not the top scorer of the night.

Faith’s Brady Mann scored 45 points, more than 77 percent of the offense for the Falcons. With obvious heat on him defensively, Mann had 14 foul shots, and he made 13.

“We had some defensive breakdowns tonight,” Shalom coach Danley Shank said. “But offensively we were able to get out to a lead and handle their run.”

Stains began the night strong, scoring 10 of Shalom’s 17 points in the first quarter. He converted six of seven free throw attempts and had a 3-pointer to start the second quarter.

Barrett Eshbaugh was the next leading scorer for the Flames (1-0, 1-0 MDCC) with 10 points.
