Poll: YAIAA boys' Athlete of the Week | May 18-May 23

A tip of the hat must go to the Spring Grove baseball team, which ripped off two wins this past week in the District 3 Class AAA tournament.

Seeded No. 4 in the Class AAA bracket. the Rockets beat No. 13 Bishop McDevitt 8-2 in Round 1, then came back to top No. 12 Greencastle-Antrim 3-2 in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The Rockets are now 17-6 on the season, and it’s nothing to take for granted.

The program - which has been strong over recent years - lost an abundance of senior starters from its 2014 squad. That, and the Rockets acquired a new leader over the offseason, promoting long-time assistant Kevin Stiffler to take over for the departed Eric Zeigler.

But the Rockets have gotten progressively better this season, winning a YAIAA Division I championship with a 12-3 league mark.

They continue to play on this week, with a District 3 semifinals contest Tuesday against No. 8 Twin Valley.

Congrats to Ravaughn Dillard, the Gettysburg track and field athlete who won a gold medal in the triple jump during last weekend's PIAA championship. Dillard won with a jump of 47 feet, 11 inches.
