While it was a strong effort from the entire group, junior Carson Gross won a gold medal on Wednesday in the 200-yard freestyle competition.

Speaking of state tournaments, three girls’ basketball teams were eliminated in the second round of the PIAA Tournament this past week.

The York Catholic girls lost, 46-42, to Basil Academy on Tuesday. The Irish were done in by a standout performance from Basil Academy’s Natalie Kucowski, who had quite the stat line: six points, eight assists and 12 blocked shots. It was a memorable year for the Irish, who won their 10th-straight District 3 Class AA championship while collecting some clutch wins along the way. Now the program must replace five seniors, four of which were starters in 2015.

The West York girls’ basketball team also fell short, losing to Bonner Prendergrast, 59-53. The Bulldogs led a good portion of the game - up 10 in the first half and up five entering the fourth quarter. But in the end, Bonner Prendergrast was too much, getting 32 points from Alyssa Monghan in the victory.

Lastly was the Christian School of York girls’ basketball team, which lost to Portage, 72-37. It was a tough game for the Crusaders, who committed 32 turnovers, were outrebounded 41-21 and made just 12 field goals. Still, it was a strong season for CSY, which finished with a 21-8 overall record, reached its first-ever district championship game and made its first state playoff appearance.

With that, a look at some top individual performances in our Athlete of the Week poll:
