Poll: YAIAA boys' Athlete of the Week | Feb. 2-Feb. 7

The favorites held serve when the YAIAA boys' basketball tournament opened on Saturday.

In fact, the closest game was nine points in the first round, but expect much tighter matchups during round two when Central York will face Northeastern and William Penn will take on West York in what should be a terrific night of action, Wednesday at Red Lion.

Sam Saxton scoring his 1,000th career point highlighted the past weekend, as the Central senior reached his milestone while leading the Panthers with 16 points in a lopsided 71-33 victory over York Catholic.

Northeastern held off Spring Grove, 56-47, in the closest game of the night. Kobi Nwandu led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Mike Coleman had 12 and Jeff Reynolds 11.

Perhaps more telling was how Northeastern's defense limited Rockets' standout Eli Brooks to only three points in the second half. Brooks finished with 14.

In other quarterfinal action, West York ran past Hanover 62-37 with the Bulldogs excelling at both ends of the court.

Darian McCauley led West York with 15 points and the Bulldogs limited YAIAA scoring leader Dylan Krieger to 18.

Dover stayed with William Penn for a half, but the Bearcats flexed their muscles with a 30-point third quarter en route to a 91-61 win.

Montrel Morgan had 23 points and Jahaire Wilson 21 for William Penn, helping to offset the 31 dropped by Eagles senior Ryan Beck.
