West York tops midseason YAIAA girls' basketball power rankings

A few changes since the last assessment. To get an idea as to how far some of these teams have come, just listen to Red Lion junior guard Courtney Dimoff's thoughts on the Lions' improvement in the video below.

Here are the YAIAA girls' basketball power rankings at the midway point of the regular-season schedule:

1. West York (11-0) -- The Bulldogs stand atop the District 3 Class AAA rankings and have made statement after statement with their play. They also have handed York Suburban, one of the YAIAA's most-improved teams, two of its three losses in convincing fashion.

2. Red Lion (11-2) -- If there's a setback to the YAIAA's realignment this season, it could be that we won't get a West York-Lions showdown for the Division I title. Courtney Dimoff and Amy Maciejewski led a 45-40 win against Dallastown on Friday, which ended a challenging week that included an overtime win vs. New Oxford.

3. New Oxford (10-2) -- Speaking of the Colonials, they bounced back from the Red Lion game with a statement win against Adams County power Delone Catholic. New Oxford's start is no surprise. YAIAA coaches polled before the season liked the Colonials' chances in Division I. They opened the District 3 ratings last week ranked fifth in Class AAAA and are currently seventh.

4. Delone Catholic (11-2) -- Although Delone is second to York Catholic in the Class AA rankings for the district, the Squirettes own an important Division III win vs. the Irish. That is enough to keep them ahead of York Catholic in these rankings.

5. York Catholic (10-2) -- The Irish got a second shot at Berks Catholic after holding off the Saints last month in Central York's holiday tournament. In their rematch, it was Berks Catholic keeping the Irish at bay until the final horn.

In contention: 6. Dallastown (9-3), 7. Central York (10-3), 8. York Suburban (10-3), 9. Northeastern (8-5), 10. Biglerville (10-3)
