All-star wrestling, golf event in the works

This year's YAIAA senior all-star wrestling match, which will be sponsored by the Greater York Area Wrestling Officials chapter, is set to take place 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 12 at South Western.

Not only will the league's top senior grapplers be showcased, but so will the top sixth-grade wrestlers.

Admission for the event will be $4 for adults and $2 for students. Proceeds benefit the annual scholarships awarded by the officials to graduating seniors. This year, two seniors moving onto college will receive $500 awards from the chapter.

Also, to help raise money for those scholarships, the Greater York Area Wrestling Officials chapter will host its first golf outing on Saturday, June 8 at Grandview Golf Club in Dover. The shotgun start will take place at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $65 per golfer and includes greens fees, cart, catered lunch and door prizes. Four-player teams will compete in a scramble format.

Each year, the chapter selects at least one senior wrestler for a scholarship, regardless of whether he intends to compete at the collegiate level. In 2013, the chapter will award two scholarships and hopes to expand the program in the future to benefit a greater number of students.

Sponsorships are available for the outing. For more information, contact Tom Zirkle at 676-6634 or tszirkle@comcast.net.
