ID=75286642

As usual, the District 3 Class AAA Wrestling Championships produced a significant amount of newsworthy action that didn’t find itself in the York Sunday News. This is especially true for the third- and fourth-place finishers, each of whom qualified for the PIAA wrestling championships in Giant Center March 7-9. Here’s a brief recap of each of those seven wrestlers who only got their names in the newspaper.

  • Dylan Chatterton, Central York, third at 106: The Panther freshman is one of only three District 3 ninth-graders to qualify for Class AAA states. After losing a 3-1 decision to Zach Elvin of Central Dauphin in the semifinals, he earned a spot in the consolation finals with a convincing win over South Western’s Owen Wherley. He then defeated Warwick freshman Devin Schnupp for the second time in the tournament in earn the third-place medal.
  • Derek Carlisle, Spring Grove, fourth at 113: The Rocket senior gave up a five-point lead early in his semifinal against Central Dauphin’s Austin Camacci and couldn’t recover. He clinched his state berth also on one big move. Down 4-2 late in the second period against Solanco’s Austin Laws in the consolation semis, Carlisle exploded from the bottom, throwing the Golden Mule senior onto his back for a four-pointer and then held on for a 6-5 decision.
  • Zack Clingan, Spring Grove, fourth at 120: The Rocket junior looked like he had earned a finals berth when he got tilted by Middletown’s Zach Ulerick late in their semifinal. Ulerick then scored the winning takedown in overtime. Clingan was able to rebound and join Carlisle in the PIAAs with a tight 4-2 decision over Dallastown’s Nick Shields, a state qualifier himself in 2012. He was on his way to a third-place finish, leading Oley Valley’s Joey Frick, 4-0 in the second period on the consolation final before Frick caught Clingan in a spadle for a fall.
  • Wes Hoover, Dallastown, third at 138: The Wildcat junior knocked off returning PIAA finalist Matt Grossmann of Manheim Township, 1-0, in his second consolation match. He then was awarded a forfeit to the consolation final and claimed the third-place medal with a takedown in overtime against Ben Metzler of Manheim Central.
  • Tanner Druck, Dallastown, fourth at 152: The Wildcat senior was one of four wrestlers at the weight class ranked in the state’s top eight, and all four qualified for a return trip to Hershey. Druck won three wrestleback matches to reach the consolation final. This was recognized as the toughest weight of all in the tournament.
  • Kyle Narber, West York, fourth at 170: The Bulldog junior powered his way into the state tournament with a pin of semifinalist Mac Evarts of Penn Manor 13 seconds into the third period. Unfortunately, he gave up the fall in the consolation final to Big Spring’s Cody Seibert.
  • Aram Moffitt, South Western, fourth at 220: The Mustang senior lost a heart-breaker in the semifinals, getting taken down by Carlisle’s Hasan Alic with just three seconds left in the bout. He bounced back with a solid decision over Ben Martin of Palmyra. He was leading the consolation final against Wilson’s Hunter Hatlee when the Bulldog junior, who had lost to Moffitt in the quarterfinals, turned the tables and scored the fall midway through the final period.
