Weekly Rewind: Feb. 11-16

It was quite a busy week as the YAIAA crowned champions in boys and girls basketball and held its swimming championships.

Plus, the District 3 hoops playoffs began Friday and the District 3 individual wrestling postseason began Saturday.

Let's get started:

1. William Penn wrapped up its second straight league tournament title Friday night at York College with its third win vs. Division I rival South Western this season. The Bearcats managed a 57-44 win despite being without Derek Wilson, who suffered an ankle injury Thursday.

Even without Wilson and coming off a 59-point blowout of Northeastern in the semifinals, the Bearcats stayed focused and continued to build momentum for the upcoming District 3 Class AAAA playoffs.

2. The girls' league tournament final, played a night before at York College, also featured a third meeting between two Division I foes.

Two days after handing Dover its first loss in the semifinals, Dallastown took care of the West York, 50-37, for the title.

It was redemption of sorts for the tough-minded Wildcats, who failed to win a Division I title thanks in part to a one-point loss to the Bulldogs earlier this month.

3. Friday night was also the beginning of the District 3 basketball preliminary rounds for classes AAAA and AAA.

On the girls' side, both Kennard-Dale and Red Lion advanced to the first round. The No. 15 Rams travel to No. 2 West York on Wednesday for a date with the Bulldogs in a 3-AAA game while the No. 13 Lions head to No. 4 Central Dauphin on Tuesday.

The Dallastown boys weren't as fortunate. The Wildcats' season ended with a 54-44 loss at Hempfield in a 3-AAAA game.

4. In the water, Dallastown absolutely dominated the YAIAA swimming championships.  The Wildcats won all but one boys' event and Dallastown's Alyssa Bixler was the only female to win multiple events.

Earlier in the week, Central York's Gabe Patil and Dallastown's Elizabeth Rothrock captured YAIAA diving titles.

5. The individual wrestling postseason kicked off Saturday afternoon in various gyms around the state.

Close to home, it was business as usual for Spring Grove. The Rockets won four individual titles and cruised to the District 3 Class AAA Section V team crown at South Western. In all, Spring Grove will send 11 wrestlers to next week's District 3/Southcentral Regional at Hersheypark Arena, including gold medalists Zack Clingan (120), Dakota Laughman (132), Mason Bentzel (145) and Alex Guinn (220).

The Rockets' team point total was 187.5 easily beat second-place finishers Dallastown and South Western, who each finished with 120.

At the District 3 Class AA Section I tournament, perennial powers Biglerville, Bermudian Springs and Boiling Springs fought tooth and nail for the team title.

But, the bigger story was Fairfield advancing seven wrestlers to next weekend's District 3 Class AA tournament at Hersheypark Arena. Wayne Wivell was the Green Knights' lone champ at 138.

The Canners, with 186.5 points, took home the team title. Boiling Springs (185) was second and Bermudian Springs (181.5) third.
