West York's Brody Kern receives pleasant wake-up call

Brody Kern almost was not sure what his coach, West York's Ron Miller, was saying when he called Saturday morning. Part of it could have been because he was just waking up.

"He told me, 'I did everything I possibly could ... you made the team.' The way he started, I didn't make it," Kern recalled of learning he made this year's Big 33 team. "I said, 'Could you say it again?'

"He just started laughing."

Kern, West York's starting center for four years, was announced as a selection of this year's Big 33 Football Classic on June 15 at Hersheypark Stadium. The feel will be different this year, as Pennsylvania's opponent will now be Maryland. The state signed a five-year agreement to play in the Big 33 game, replacing Ohio.

"I was there last year and I saw a couple of other Big 33 games," Kern said. "It should be exciting playing against the best athletes in Maryland."

Kern's role in the Big 33 game will likely alter his summer plans, too. He wanted to enroll early at Division I-FCS Delaware, where he will play football. But because it is against Big 33 rules to play in the game and be enrolled in college, Kern must wait until a later summer session before attending classes.
