Weekly Rewind (Dec. 10-15)
Now that the first full week of winter sports is in the books, we're back to recap everything that's been happening in the world of high school sports.
1. First, let us start by saying goodbye to John Clayton, our talented preps writer. John's last day at the Daily Record/Sunday News was Friday. His final assignment was Central York's 56-39 boys' basketball win vs. Dover.
The Panthers forced 23 turnovers and their defense harassed the Eagles into a 13-for-35 night shooting from the floor. Corey Hartz led Central York on offense with 12 points.
2. The Dallastown boys' swim team made an early statement Saturday by winning the Bucknell Invitational. The Wildcats finished first out of 18 teams.
And, if you missed it, swimming expert Steve Navaroli returned from his battle with cancer this week and didn't miss a beat by churning out the YAIAA swimming preview.
3. Most YAIAA basketball fans know all about Sierra Moore. If you don't, she is the YAIAA's all-time leading girls' basketball scorer and a freshman at Duke.
Now, meet her brother, Devon Moore.
A little more than a year after suffering a torn ACL, Moore poured in 26 points in his Delone Catholic debut to help the Squires beat Eastern York, 58-54, Tuesday.
"That's not a bad debut," Delone Catholic coach Jim Dooley told John Clayton. "And he's going to get nothing but better."
4. If Eastern York builds on what it did Friday night in girls' basketball, the YAIAA could have another powerful program. And York Catholic coach Kevin Bankos would be partially to blame.
Bankos' former assistant at York Catholic, new Eastern coach Cheryl Land, pushed her former team to the brink but came up short in a 38-37 loss.
The lead changed hands four times in the final quarter Friday and York Catholic didn't wrap up the win until the Knights missed a shot at the buzzer.
5. The Susquehannock girls' basketball team did something not many opponents have done to Red Lion on its home floor: the Warriors owned the fourth quarter and nearly shocked the defending District 3 Class AAAA champions Friday.
Red Lion held a 47-31 lead after three quarters, but Susquehannock turned up the pressure on defense and nearly staged a stunning, early-season upset before falling, 54-52.
