Red Land's Shane Dressler commits to VCU

The Patriots' first baseman made it official the other day, signing a national letter of intent to play for the Rams.

Dressler, who is the No. 4-ranked player in the state in the 2013 class, according to Prep Baseball Report, chose VCU because "they really threw out the red carpet when I went to visit. The coaching staff spent so much time trying to recruit me, it was flattering."

Dressler considered Virginia Tech, Saint Johns, Louisville, Boston College, Maryland, Citadel and Furman but ultimately made an early decision, verbally committing to VCU in the summer of 2011.

Here's a glance at Dressler's stats from last season (according to MaxPreps):

  • .412 batting average
  • 23 RBIs
  • 19 runs scored
  • Seven doubles, one triple
  • .544 slugging percentage

    Here's more from Dressler:

  • Favorite player: My family is big Phillies fans, so I would have to say, Chase Utley is my favorite player. I know he has tailed off the last couple of years mostly due to injuries, but the guy always hustles and always does the right thing on and off the field.

  • Goals: I want to help Red Land win a state championship this year. I'd like to help VCU go deep in the NCAA Playoffs when I get down there. I really want to play professionally. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.
