Weekly Rewind (Nov. 12-17)
And then there were three.
That's the number of YAIAA fall sports teams still playing as we head into the week of Thanksgiving. All three are football teams -- Bermudian Springs, Delone Catholic and West York.
Two other fall sports teams saw their seasons end last week. The Biglerville boys' soccer team came up two wins shy of a PIAA Class A state title while the Delone Catholic girls' volleyball team lost in the PIAA Class AA championship bout Saturday. Let's start the recap:
1. In another resounding District 3 Class AAA win, West York staked its claim as a legitimate threat to reach Hersheypark Stadium next week.
Brock Snellbaker ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception for another in the Bulldogs' 42-17 rout of Spring Grove. Despite losing, the Rockets polished off a fine turnaround season with an 8-4 record.
The 12-0 Bulldogs now find themselves in the 3-AAA semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Up next is a home date with Mid-Penn challenger Susquehanna Township on Friday at 7 p.m. The Indians beat perennial power Manheim Central, 27-17.
2. Bermudian Springs also played host to a familiar foe on Friday night.
The Eagles welcomed Biglerville back to York Springs for the second time this season for their District 3 Class AA semifinal clash.
Just like two weeks prior, it was Bermudian emerging with the win. The balanced Eagles (160 rushing yards, 152 passing) punched their ticket to the 3-AA final with a 34-14 win.
Awaiting them at Hersheypark Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. is top-seeded Wyomissing, which blitzed Schuylkill Valley, 42-14, on Friday.
3. Bermudian wasn't the only YAIAA team that advaned to a District 3 football final.
Delone Catholic wore down upset-minded Columbia, 28-16, to reach Friday's District 3 Class A final at Hersheypark Stadium. The Squires' game against Steelton-Highspire kicks off at 1 p.m. The nine-time champion Rollers pounded Millersburg, 21-0.
Leading the way for Delone, which is back in a district final for the first time since 2009, was QB Brett Smith. The senior threw for 106 yards and rushed for another 102. Smith scored twice on the ground.
4. A day after Delone's big football win, its girls' volleyball team took the court at Central York looking to polish off an unbeaten season with the school's first state girls' volleyball title.
District 10 champion Fort LeBoeuf had other ideas. Instead, it was the Bison celebrating their school's first volleyball title and an unbeaten season with a 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23) win in the PIAA Class AA final.
The Squirettes must replace some big-name players next year, but it would be foolish to think the defending YAIAA and District 3 champions are going away.
5. A season unlike any other in the history of Biglerville boys' soccer came to an end Tuesday.
Biglerville, which beat Windber for its first state playoff win in program history, finished the season 17-8-1.
Sewickley Academy lost to Mountain View, 3-1, in the state championship Friday night.
