Weekly Rewind (Sept. 5-11)
The Weekly Rewind has returned from our summer vacation in the Bahamas (joking) just in time for the fall sports season. We’ve already had some big happenings in the area high school sports scene, so let’s get you all caught up.
1. In the second week of the high school football season, our top prep writers (John Clayton and Steve Navaroli) were at arguably the two best football games in the YAIAA. An instant classic went down at West York as Chris Markel booted a 35-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play, lifting West York past visiting Dallastown, 17-15.
The winning field goal was set up by a you-had-to-see-it-to-believe-it turnover near midfield. The game was so good, Steve was blogging about it a little more than 24 hours later.
The game at York Catholic was almost as good. York Catholic, as it had a week prior at Northeastern, put together a last-ditch effort to try and prevent starting the year 0-2. The Irish drove to Bermudian’s 10-yard line before running out of time in a 14-7 loss.
2. A year removed from an ugly 1-9 campaign, things aren’t looking much better for the William Penn football team. The Bearcats lost to Coatesville and former coach Matt Ortega in Week 1 and then failed to hold a lead in an 18-15 loss to J.P. McCaskey. The Bearcats led, 15-6, before surrendering the final 12 points of the game. Things don't get any easier this week as William Penn heads to Harrisburg. The Cougars beat state-ranked Wilson, 21-13, Friday night in suburban Reading.
3. This could be a special season for the Fairfield girls’ soccer team. Only four months removed from a stellar spring season when it set a school record for wins, the Green Knights are loaded with eight returning starters and off to a good start. The Fairfield train kept rolling along Saturday with a 6-1 destruction of Mid-Penn member Gettysburg.
4. The Red Lion field hockey team is picking up right it left off last fall. After a stellar 13-1 campaign last season, the Lions got back to form Thursday with a 5-1 rout of New Oxford. At the forefront of the attack was junior Ali Posey. The YAIAA Division I Player of the Year last season, Posey had a hat trick in the first half to power the Lions.
5. Cumberland Valley is one of the more consistent programs in all of District 3 football. And the Eagles reiterated that fact in the first two weeks of this season. Unfortunately, both games were against YAIAA members. In Week 1, CV cruised by Red Lion, 44-10. It was a little closer Friday at Central York, but the Mid-Penn Commonwealth power still won, 35-17.
Speaking of Red Lion, things didn’t get any easier in Week 2. The Lions dropped to 0-2 with a 42-7 home loss to Manheim Township
That’s two losses by a combined score of 86-17. But it’s important to keep in mind that both games were against teams that should compete to win not only their respective divisions but are also expected to be in the thick of the hunt for a District 3 Class AAAA title. So, for scheduling the big boys, props to the Lions.
