Live updates: PIAA track & field championships

The YAIAA is sending a solid crop of athletes to the PIAA track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg, and reporter John Clayton will keep you updated on all of the action. Events begin at 9 a.m.

Follow @johnsclayton on Twitter, or check out his updates in the Twitter feed on the right. John will also be adding periodic updates to this blog post, so be sure to check back often.

UPDATE (5:25 p.m.) -- Just call this the year of the pole vault in the YAIAA.

The York-Adams area produced a pair of medalists in the event Friday: Delone Catholic's Grace Reidel took seventh in the girls' Class AA event, and Littlestown's Roger Hollenbaugh grabbed fifth in the boys' Class AA competition.

Not to mention the league still has the potential for two more pole vault medals tomorrow, with Dallastown's Jared Allison and Kennard-Dale's Dylan Moynihan competing in the boys' Class AAA contest.

The final races of the day are finishing up, so we'll wrap things up for the day. I'll be back at 9 a.m. sharp tomorrow, so be sure to follow along. And check out GameTimePA.com later for coverage from all of today's proceedings.

UPDATE (4:01) -- His final race of the day complete, Central York’s Jay Stone sat between a pair of water coolers in a cool-off area.*

The heat Friday took its toll on athletes who competed in multiple events. In Stone’s case the sophomore ran three races--the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and 400 relay. He guaranteed himself a medal by qualifying for today’s 300 hurdles final, and moved on to the semis of the 110 hurdles.*

“I usually keep my sweats on the whole time, and I had to take them off,” Stone said. “Obviously in the morning it wasn’t as hot. Then out of nowhere it got really hot.”

Stone won a gold medal at district last week in the 300 hurdles and placed second in the 110. He wasn't thrilled with his times Friday, but also knows he'll have another chance tomorrow.

UPDATE (1:46) -- We have our second YAIAA medalist of the day. Delone Catholic freshman Grace Reidel vaulted 11 feet to take seventh in the girls' Class AA pole vault. The mark was both a personal and school record.

Another batch of field events is under way. The league's best hope for a medalist in those is likely Littlestown's Roger Hollenbaugh, who enters the boys' Class AA pole vault seeded fourth.

Meanwhile, the preliminaries for the track events have been going on with relatively few surprises. High seeds like Red Lion's Angelica Gonzalez (100, AAA), Central York's Jay Stone (110 hurldes, AAA) and Megan Lundy (400, AAA) have advanced to tomorrow. Those three also have preliminary races in other events coming up later.

UPDATE (11:42 a.m.) -- There was no elation, no outpouring of emotion when the she heard the number announced.

Instead, South Western’s Tess Weaver simply exited the thrower’s circle and walked to retrieve her shot during the girls’ Class AAA shot put competition at Day 1 of the PIAA Track and Field Championships on Friday. It wasn’t until the Mustangs thrower looked over and saw her coaches that she finally cracked a smile.

Inside, of course, Weaver was buzzing. She had just thrown the shot 40 feet, 2 ¾ inches, good enough to earn her fifth place at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.

“I dreamt of (medaling at states), but I never thought it would happen,” said Weaver, who was seeded 12th in the event coming into the day. “It’s awesome that it did senior year.”

Not only was the throw a personal record, it also capped an incredible two week for the Mustangs senior.

Between her second-place finish at the District 3 meet and Friday’s performance, Weaver increased her PR by nearly four feet. She had thrown 35-10 ½ two weekends ago at the YAIAA Championships.

UPDATE (9 a.m.) -- Hello, all. We're live here at Seth Grove Stadium on the campus of Shippensburg University. The infield here is crowded with athletes warming up. The first races of the day are about the get started.

I'll be posting dispatches here throughout the day on some of the notable YAIAA athletes competing here. Today is a day of preliminaries on the track, with some field event finals sprinkled in here and there. Stay tuned for updates.
