William Penn guard Dejian Williams headed to Harcum

William Penn basketball standout Dejian Williams has decided on the next step in his playing career. The senior guard has committed to Harcum College, Bearcats coach Troy Sowers said Thursday.

Williams will receive a full scholarship to Harcum, a junior college in Bryn Mawr. He will officially sign with the school on Friday.

The hope is that Williams can refine his game at Harcum, then transfer to a higher profile program. The program has a history of sending players to bigger schools -- six players from Harcum's 2010 class signed with Division I colleges.

"I think it's the perfect place for him," Sowers said.

Williams was the YAIAA's Division I/II player of the year this past season, during which he led the Bearcats with an 18.2 points per game average. Williams, who transferred to William Penn from New Hope after his sophomore season, finished his career with 1,259 points.

At Harcum, Williams will follow the footsteps of another former Bearcats standout: 2009 grad Malachi Leonard, who spent the past two years at the school.

Harcum is regarded as one of the top junior college basketball programs in the region. In the seven years since the program's inception, Harcum has compiled a 173-42 record. The Bears 2009-2010 team won 25 consecutive games and earned the nation's No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division I poll. Harcum finished 24-5 this past season under head coach Drew Kelly.
