District 3 football rankings: Week 10 update

As we get ready for the final week of the high school football regular season, here's a quick look at where YAIAA teams stand in the District 3 playoff picture.

CLASS AAAA (Top 16 qualify)

Complete rankings here

7. Central York (7-2)

9. South Western (7-2)

12. Red Lion (5-4)

17. Dallastown (4-5)

The big matchup to watch this week is the annual rivalry clash between Dallastown and Red Lion. The Lions are almost certainly in, regardless of this Friday's result. Dallastown needs to win and get a little bit of help. The good news: The two teams immediately in front of them -- Carlisle and Hempfield -- have tough matchups this week. The Thundering Herd play Cumberland Valley. Hempfield plays Manheim Township. So if the Wildcats win, you'd have to like their chances to get in. ... Central York should lock up a home game if it can beat William Penn. ... South Western has a winnable matchup with Spring Grove, but they'll still need some help to avoid having to play their first-round game away from the Corral.

3. West York (7-2)

6. Dover (8-1)

15. Northeastern (5-4)

The big risers continue to be the Bulldogs. West York has been helped out by a great OWWP (wins against South Western and Governor Mifflin have provided a strength-of-schedule boost) and losses by Conrad Weiser and Hershey last week helped West York move up two spots into the No. 3 hole. Can't say for sure, but Weiser may be able to jump back ahead of the Bulldogs if it beats Governor Mifflin this week ... Dover also bumped up a spot last week. Even with a win, though, that position might not be set in stone. Manheim Central, Greencastle-Antrim and Hershey are all just percentage points behind the Eagles. ... Good chance Northeastern gets in with a win over Kennard-Dale, but that's not quite set in stone. ... One other interesting note. If these rankings hold, and West York and Dover were to win their first-round games, the two rivals would then play in the second round. We're getting away ahead of ourselves here. But hey, you never know...

CLASS AA (Top 8 qualify)

2. Bermudian Springs (9-0)

4. Delone Catholic (8-1)

6. Littlestown (6-3)

9. Biglerville (5-4)

Bermudian Springs continued its fantastic season with 42-7 pasting of Littlestown on Friday. The only thing standing between the Eagles' 10-0 regular season -- and the No. 2 seed in the district playoffs -- is a visit to rival Biglerville. ... Delone is currently in line for a first-round home game, barely two thousandths of a percentage point ahead of Trinity. The Shamrocks play Boiling Springs (5-4) this week. Not sure if Trinity can edge ahead of Delone, but it bears watching. ... Littlestown stays at No. 6 despite a mercy-rule loss to Bermudian Springs. The Thunderbolts play Fairfield this week. ... Don't count the Canners out yet. Yes, they'd need to pull a major upset against Bermudian Springs to have a shot at getting in. But it is a rivalry game. Stranger things have happened.

CLASS A (Top 4 qualify)

4. York Catholic (4-5)

Even with a loss, the Fighting Irish would almost certainly hold onto that fourth and final playoff spot. With a win over York Suburban, however, they might be able to move up past Millersburg and into that No. 3 hole.
