Monmouth hires Rice as men's basketball coach

Eastern York standouts Austin Tillotson and Andrew Nicholas know who they'll be playing for next season. Monmouth, the school both have signed with, announced Tuesday it has hired King Rice as its new men's basketball coach. Besides having a really cool name, Rice, 42, has an extensive assistant coaching background -- he spent the last five seasons as an assistant at Vanderbilt -- and was a point guard at North Carolina from 1988-91. The university will hold an introductory press conference tomorrow at noon. You can find more on his coaching background by visiting Monmouth's athletics website. Rice will replace longtime coach Dave Calloway, who resigned under pressure from the administration in February. The Hawks finished 9-21 last season, including 5-13 in Northeast Conference play. A few days after Calloway stepped down, Nicholas and Tillotson reiterated their intention to stick with Monmouth.
