Rare territory for YAIAA quad-A football teams

Based on their last meeting, Dallastown and Red Lion's impending showdown in the District 3 Class AAAA quarterfinals looks like a rather tough game to call. But the matchup does ensure at least one thing: A quad-A team from the YAIAA will play in the District 3 semifinals in two weeks. And that's rather uncharted territory for big schools from this area. How uncharted? Since the district's quad-A playoffs expanded from four teams in 2004, only once has a YAIAA team made it to the Class AAAA semifinals. And no local quad-A teams have done it since those playoffs expanded to 16 teams in 2006. Before 2004, when the district Class AAAA playoffs were four-team affairs, having a YAIAA team qualify for the semis was relatively commonplace. But only once has a local team appeared in the quad-A final (South Western made it in 2000, only to lose to Cumberland Valley, 49-14). In all, YAIAA teams are 1-11 in the District 3 Class AAAA semifinals. Ouch.
