Freshman ignites Greencastle's front line

It's not often that a freshman can turn heads in a varsity volleyball match.

But that's just what Baylee Schaeffer did for Greencastle-Antrim on Tuesday night in a 3-0 victory over Waynesboro.

"She started on JV, but she was a floater," Greencastle junior Keri Gearhart said. "Then we realized how our outsides weren't working well. We moved her up, decided to put her in practice and she really connected well with our setter (Gabby Baughman), so we kept her up."

The Blue Devil rookie had a fine effort Tuesday, finishing with five kills. She also contributed three aces and a dig.

"She is doing great," G-A coach Corry Eagler said. "Madee (Goodwin) is getting a lot more confident, too. The two of them on the outside is great because of their defense. They're so fast, so they can play everything off the block and still get outside and swing. It's nice having that to build on."

And with less than a half a season under her belt, there's a lot of promise for Schaeffer in the future.
