A glance at the week ahead (Jan. 6th-10th)
The lull from the holiday break is beginning to wear off and the Hanover-Adams area has a full slate of sports action next week. Here's a quick glance at a few of the key matchups:
Jan. 6 - York Country Day at Biglerville, 7:30 p.m. (Girls basketball)
- Even though this game has no ramifications within the league, it still carries plenty of significance. Biglerville senior Rebecca Isaac is seven points shy of joining the 1,000 point club. She will become the first Canner to do so since Brock Grim in 2007. Biglerville currently sits in third place in the YAIAA Division III, so every win counts.
Jan. 6 - New Oxford at Red Lion, 7:30 p.m. (Girls basketball) - The Colonials have already knocked off one team from the top ranks of Division I when they upended Dallastown, 36-22, a few weeks ago . They will get their shot against a Red Lion team that is undefeated in the division and on a seven-game winning streak. The Lions are led by Courtney Dimoff, who is averaging 18 points per game.

Jan. 7 - Lower Dauphin at Spring Grove, 7:30 p.m. (Boys basketball) - The Rockets will play four games in five days this week and there’s not a “cupcake” on the schedule in that span. This game was originally scheduled to be played at LD, but the Mid-Penn team will visit Spring Grove instead.
The Falcons have won three of their last four coming into the week. The Rockets have won three in a row and currently sit in second place in division I. A win wouldn’t help the Rockets’ division standing, but adding two or three wins in five days would be a huge lift.
Jan. 8 - Delone Catholic at Bermudian Springs, 7 p.m. (Wrestling) - This matchup pits the top two teams in the division against each other. Led by Sam McCollum (220-pound weight class), Colton Dull (182/195) and Briton Shelton (182/195), the Eagles are off to a 7-0 start, including a 5-0 day at the Northern Lebanon Duals just before the holiday break. McCollum and Dull haven’t lost a match yet this season. Delone will be a tough test for Bermudian. The Squires are off to a 6-1 start that included a statement 50-24 win over rival Hanover in mid-December.
Jan. 9 - William Penn at South Western, 7:30 p.m. (Girls basketball) - The Mustangs are young, but are sitting just under .500. William Penn is one of the teams in Division I that the Mustangs can compete with. The Mustangs are 1-2 in games decided by five points or less on the season. Free throw shooting could be a huge factor in this one, and that is an area that the Mustangs’ need to improve on. They are only shooting 59 percent as a team from the line. The key is going to be stopping Bearcats' leading scorer Chyna Steele (18.4 points per game).
Jan. 9 - Bermudian Springs at Delone Catholic, 7:30 p.m. (Boys basketball) - This is a matchup between two teams hovering around .500, trying to get on a roll. The Eagles are currently tied for second in the division - one spot ahead of Delone.
Bermudian started slow, but has won three out of four and will face Hanover earlier in the week.
It will be a matchup of polar-opposite styles. The Squires are a fast-paced, up-and-down team, while the Eagles feature a deliberate, halfcourt offense. Which style and team will prevail?
Jan. 10 - Delone Catholic at New Oxford, 7:30 p.m. (Girls basketball) - The top two teams in the Hanover-area square off to do battle in their only matchup of the season. Delone has the star power in Maddie Comly (22.4 ppg), but has also been receiving solid contributions all season long from Jill Novak (12.2) and Ally Shipley (11.4). New Oxford is lead by Kaelyn Long and her 14 ppg. The Colonials play a stingy, up-tempo defense. They are allowing a mere 27.8 ppg while scoring 45.7. This should be one of the best matchups of the year in the Hanover-area.
