Week two of the Hanover-Adams area football power rankings
In our first installment of this season’s Hanover-Adams area football power rankings, we mentioned how area teams got off to a disappointing 3-7 combined record in week one. They turned it around and went 7-3 in week two. Maybe our post was motivation, maybe it wasn’t.
Either way, each of our teams ranked 7-10 earned impressive victories, including Biglerville and Hanover, both snapping long losing streaks after winning two games combined last season. Will that be enough to get them out of the basement in our week two power rankings?
The best
1. Bermudian Springs (Last week: 1)--Yes, their running production decreased from 395 yards in week one to 305 yards in week two. That, if it even counts as a negative, would be the only pessimistic thing that could be said about the Eagles. They won handily, 36-6, over Boiling Springs and are one of just five undefeated teams left across YAIAA. GameDay with GameTimePA listeners have already started asking if they can run the table and go 10-0.
2. Gettysburg (LW: 2)--Remember when Mike Rubin and Brandon Stoneburg picked South Western over Gettysburg and said the Warriors’ week-two game against New Oxford would be close? Yeah, neither do we..
The Warriors opened their new stadium by blowing out the Colonials, 42-6. After giving up 41 points in week one, the defense improved, holding New Oxford to 85 total yards and zero offensive touchdowns.
How cool would it be to see a Bermudian-Gettysburg matchup with those two offenses?
The Rest
3. Spring Grove (LW: 4)--The Rockets nearly knocked off powerhouse Cumberland Valley before falling late, 21-17, in week one, then blasted past Mechanicsburg, 17-7. In all, they outscored two solid nonleague teams, 38-24, and the defense looks solid. The Rockets host York Suburban this week. The Trojans haven’t scored a point yet this year.
4. Delone Catholic (LW: 7)--The Squires move up three spots after a blowout win over Columbia. The passing game, which was a question mark coming into the season, has been solid so far with Brian Shermeyer at the helm. The offense seems to be clicking and injured-QB Jake Wiles even snuck in a touchdown from the 1-yard line. Delone will try to get above .500 as they host St. Paul’s School from Maryland.
5. Littlestown (LW: 3)--Bolts nation, coach Mike Lippy and most of the Littlestown team seemed a little shell-shocked after being blown out at home, 49-14. Lippy took full blame and said that losing at home is a situation in which his team isn’t used to being in. He was disappointed in recent practice efforts and wanted to get back to work. The Bolts travel to Lancaster Catholic this week.
6. Fairfield (LW: 8)--If you looked at just the box score from the game against James Buchanan, you’d think the Green Knights most likely lost. They were outgained 317-184 in total yards and the offense didn’t seem to have much of a rhythm. But Mason Flickinger was the difference-maker, scoring the opening touchdown on an interception return and the game-winning score on a 2-yard run. Up next for Fairfield is a home game against Carson Long Institute.
7. Hanover (LW: 9)--We mentioned that week two could be the first time that the Nighthawks were favored and they didn’t disappoint. Colton Ehrhart and Jordan Laughman each scored twice and Hanover won easily, 35-7, for its first win at Sheppard-Myers Stadium since it was renovated two years ago. With another win, Hanover could match its win total from the previous four years combined. They travel to Eastern York this week.
8. Biglerville (LW: 10)--Another pleasant surprise was the Canners ending a 10-game losing streak with a 34-28 win at Waynesboro. Head Coach Alex Ramos said afterward that with the losing streak, doubt was starting to set in, but the guys kept their spirits up. The defense still needs to get better but the Canners have a chance at a 2-1 record if they can knock off a New Oxford team that is still looking for its first win.
9. New Oxford (LW: 6)--It seems unfair to put two Division-I teams at the bottom of the rankings after losses to very good teams. But an 0-2 record leaves New Oxford and South Western near the bottom until they can turn things around. The Colonials have had to deal with Bermudian Springs and Gettysburg, two very good offenses, in the first two weeks. The Colonials offense has managed just 13 points so far this season. A matchup at Biglerville looms in week three.
10. South Western (LW: 5)--Once again, we believe these teams are probably better than their records, but South Western has given up 99 points in two games, so they fall five spots this week. However, sophomore Andrew Hartlaub has six touchdowns – two receptions, three kickoff returns and a rush. The schedule doesn’t get much easier as the Mustangs travel to Carlisle this week.
