DIST. 3 SWIMMING: Chambersburg's girls cap off fine weekend with another pair of school records

NEW KINGSTOWN >> To say it was a good weekend for Chambersburg's girls swimming team at the District 3 Class AAA Championships would be a bit of an understatement.

The Lady Trojans competed in six different events, produced six best times and knocked out four school records. After Abby Stauffer and the 200 medley relay teams broke school records on Friday, they were back at it at Cumberland Valley High School on Saturday.

Stauffer competed in the 500 freestyle, a new event for her, and placed sixth overall. Her time of 5:04.76 broke her own school record.

"Her whole heat was really fast," Chambersburg girls coach Donnie Miller said. "I know that we only have three automatic bids to the state meet, but I think that entire heat could probably make it in. She should have a good shot at an at-large bid with a very god time like that."

Stauffer then teamed up with Lauren Ellis, Karlee Metz and Ashley Ellis to compete in the 400 free relay where they finished in 3:41.92. The time was nearly eight seconds faster than their seed team and is also a new school record.

"Over the last two days, the girls have swam very well," Miller said. "I'm very pleased with the success we had this weekend. It's a testament to these girls and how hard they work and the time they put in. Fast times don't just happen; they all deserve everything that they were able to accomplish this weekend."

Lauren Ellis also jumped seven places from her seed in the 100 backstroke with a personal best of 1:01.34. Ellis placed 16th, and following right behind was Waynesboro's Claire Koons in 17th with a time of 1:01.40.

For Chambersburg's boys team, Chandler Desotelle had the top finish, placing 15th in the 500 free, while Andrew Leeper took 18th in the 100 free and 20th in the 100 back. Also competing in Class AAA was Waynesboro's Darek Benchoff, who took 30th in the 100 free.

James Buchanan got a nice surprise in the form of Clay Murray in Class AA. Seeded just 23rd heading into the 100 backstroke, Murray dropped more than four seconds from his seed time to clock in at 1:01.43 for 16th place. Jacob Sempowski was the Rockets' top male finisher, taking 12th in the 100 back. Garrett Starr also claimed 16th in the 500 free.

The trio then teamed up with Nick Garbinski to shave nearly four seconds off their seed time in the 400 free relay and claim 12th place.

The top event for JB's girls was the 400 free relay, where Kayla Snider, Hailee Banks, Amanda Montgomery and Sarah Funk placed 12th. Rachel Kimmel earned 18th in the 100 breaststroke, and Snider took 22nd in the 100 back.
