Camp Hill overwhelms Delone Catholic in AA quarterfinals

The Camp Hill Lions won the opening tip, made two passes, and freshman center Zach Kuntz dropped in an easy layup.

It would be a sign of things to come for visiting Delone Catholic. The Squires were consistently manhandled on the inside during Saturday's District 3 Class AA quarterfinal playoff game, losing 68-35.

Junior forward David Fetrow had a nice game for the Lions, scoring inside and out on his way to a game-high 24 points. He and the other Camp Hill bigs swatted away several shots and passes by the smaller Squires.

"We competed, but not at the level we should have to stay with these guys," said first-year Squires coach Lawrence Williams Jr. "We're a little short on size."

Camp Hill (18-4) had not played in two weeks. They came out aggressive, trapping the Squires full court and pounding the ball inside. Still, the score was tied 6-6 midway through the first quarter.

From that point until five minutes into the third quarter, the Lions controlled the game with a 34-7 run that featured suffocating defense. Delone Catholic scored one point in the second quarter on a free throw by Matias Bowman with 2:02 remaining.

"They came in 17-3 (actually 17-4) for a reason," Williams said.

After a 10-0 run to begin the third, Lions' coach Wayne Fletcher started substituting liberally. An ensuing 9-6 flurry from the Squires was halted when Williams was assessed a technical foul for slamming his clipboard on the floor after a block/charge call went against Delone Catholic.

Lions' G Deshawn Franklin sank 3-of-4 free throws. He finished with 18 points.

Delone Catholic finishes 12-12. They were led by Logan Alexander with 15 points. Bowman added eight.

"They're a great group of guys, and I wish things could've been different, especially for my three seniors," Williams said. "We've got a lot of guys coming back, and we just need to get back to work and get ready for next year."
