BOYS BASKETBALL: McConnellsburg ends regular season with win over Forbes Road

MCCONNELLSBURG >> McConnellsburg's boys basketball team was slow out of the gate, but it did just enough Thursday night.

Forbes Road jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, but the Spartans rallied in the second quarter and put it away with a big fourth quarter to capture a 49-38 Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference win.

The Spartans (16-6, 11-5 SHL, 10-4 ICC) clinched the No. 4 spot in the District 5 Class A Tournament and will host Shade next Thursday in the first round. It will be McConnellsburg's first time hosting a playoff game in 12 years.

The Cardinals, who end their season at 4-16 (2-14 SHL, 2-12 ICC) outscored McConnellsburg by a combined 12 points in the first and third quarters, but the Spartans dominated the second and fourth quarters, holding a 37-14 advantage.

"This is two games in a row where we didn't start well and didn't come out of the locker room well," Spartan coach Dane Pollock said. "Once we got our legs under us we started to get in a rhythm."

Jake Boehme hit three 3-pointers and led McConnellsburg with 12 points and four assists. Chase Novak and Tyrelle White, who also added seven rebounds and three steals, each had nine points, and Ian Cheatle finished with six points and six rebounds.

"We have about three or four guys that may not have even played if this weren't a rivalry game (because they were sick)," Pollock said. "This week off will be nice. Maybe we can get our legs back under us. We look tired."

Brock Broadwater led Forbes Road with 11 points, J.J. Martz had 10 and Aaron Schepis chipped in with eight.
