Throwback Thursday: Susquehannock wrestler Adam LoPiccolo a trailblazer of rookie success

York and Adams counties have a history of producing standout wrestlers. While many of them have brought home district and state titles as upperclassmen, it's rare for freshmen to experience such success (Kennard-Dale's Chance Marsteller and South Western's Joey Wildasin, notwithstanding).

But back during the 1999-2000 season, Susquehannock heavyweight Adam LoPiccolo shot onto the area wrestling scene. He is thought to be the first freshman ever to reach a Class AAA final at the PIAA wrestling championships. A state title eluded LoPiccolo during his career, but he won three District 3 crowns at 275 (sophomore), 189 (junior) and 215 (senior). When his career ended, his overall record of 142-7 (.953 winning percentage) was, at the time, the second best in league history behind Wildasin (132-1).

"I'm more than satisfied with my career," LoPiccolo said in an April 2003 article in the Daily Record. "In all seven losses, I was capable of winning the match. I just didn't. It's weird. It seems like I was just a 15-year-old kid weighing 194 pounds and wrestling heavyweight.... It's been a good road."

Recently, PennLive.com named LoPiccolo as one of the top 25 District 3 wrestlers from the past 25 years. Click here to see PennLive's story on LoPiccolo./
