There were plenty of storylines heading into Friday's game between Spring Grove and Gettysburg, and they all lived up to the hype.
First, it was a matchup of two AAU teammates, Gettysburg's Cami Boehner and Spring Grove's Morgan Arden. Both entered Friday's game averaging at least 21 points per game, and both were poised to move up a spot on their school's respective career scoring list if they hit their season average.
Second, both teams had three regular-season games remaining and are fighting to earn a spot in the upcoming District 3 tournament. Gettysburg entered Friday's game ranked 17th in Class AAA, which takes 18 teams, and Spring Grove entered holding the 20th spot in Class AAAA, which takes 20 teams.
Boehner won the individual scoring battle by four points as she led her squad to a 62-58 victory.
"They're both great players, and great players make plays when their teams need them to," Gettysburg head coach Casey Thurston said. "Both teams are fighting to make districts, and neither of them were going to back down from the challenge tonight."
Boehner finished with 36 points, seven rebounds and six assists to push her career total to 1,327 points, passing 1988 graduate Kristin McArdle for third on the school's all-time scoring list.
Meanwhile, Arden pocketed 32 points to move her career mark to 1,230, eclipsing 1983 graduate Dana Diller for second on Spring Grove's career list.
Spring Grove (11-9) held a 30-25 lead at intermission as Arden had 18 before the break to Boehner's 13. The Rockets started the second half well, taking a 36-27 lead on Arden's hoop with 6:09 left in the frame before Gettysburg called timeout.
Boehner, with some help from Maddie Weikert, put her team on her back as Gettysburg stormed back for a 41-40 lead on Weikert's hoop with 2:15 left in the third quarter. But the Rockets' strong finish to the quarter, capped by Dempsey Murphy's rainbow triple at the horn, put the visitors ahead, 49-43, heading into the fourth.
Weikert took control early in the fourth quarter for the Warriors, and her bucket with 4:38 left gave Gettysburg a 51-50 lead, the first of seven lead changes in the final quarter.
Gettysburg (12-8) took the lead for good on Boehner's triple with 1:42 to go, 58-56.
Boehner upped the lead to 60-56 with a scoop shot in the lane with 1:01 left, then Arden answered with a bucket seven seconds later.
Following a turnover, Arden had a chance to tie it, but her jumper in the lane with 11 seconds left was off the mark and a tie-up resulted in a jump ball and the possession arrow gave it to Gettysburg.
Arden's fifth foul sent Boehner to the charity stripe with three seconds to go and the Bloomsburg University recruit sealed it for the Warriors with a pair of free throws.
"It wasn't surprising at all that it was close. It was close last year (a 51-50 Gettysburg victory), and it came down to the last shot," Spring Grove head coach Gerry Rohrbaugh said. "We had some unforced errors when we had the lead with a chance to add to it and that hurt us."
Weikert finished with a career-high 22 points and corralled 13 rebounds for the winners.
"We haven't really had a close game this season, so it was nice to see the team pull together to get this win," Boehner said. "I'm so proud of Maddie right now. She really stepped up for us tonight."
Thurston echoed Boehner's statement about Weikert.
"I knew Cami and Morgan were going to get theirs tonight," Thurston said. "The question was who was going to step up big for either team to help out, and Maddie did that for us tonight. She made some huge plays both offensively and defensively."
Erika Gregory scored 13 points, while Brooke Osborne had eight points and eight boards for the Rockets.
