Related: York Suburban swims to second in state

LEWISBURG -- Victoria Griffin left the Kinney Natatorium pool in tears.

It had nothing to do with how well the Delone Catholic senior swam at Thursday's second day of the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships. It couldn't have.

Griffin swam a personal-best 50.17 in the 100 freestyle, which earned her a silver medal -- her second in as many days.

"I wasn't upset. I was so shocked," she said of the emotion of her final high school swim. "I remember last year I said I was not going to cry in my senior year."

She took more than a second off the time she swam in the morning preliminaries and finished second to Adriana Grabski of Mifflinburg Area, who set a state record with her time of 49.57.

It marked the second straight day that Grabski broke a record set in 1998 by Stef Williams of Bloomsburg, both times finishing in front of Griffin.

"I felt really good. I wanted to stay as close to her as possible. I am really happy about that," Griffin said. "I knew her seed times coming in. I knew she would wipe that out."

Still, Griffin a stand-out club swimmer at the York YMCA who will swim for Bowling Green next season, will take some great memories away from her second PIAA meet.

Her decision to swim for her school as an independent was a good one for her.

"I had a lot of fun with it. Last year I wasn't sure what I was getting into," she said. "To come here and represent my school feels good."

Hoover wins consolation swim: In the morning preliminaries West York's Taylor Hoover dropped more than three seconds from her 500 free time that qualified for states.

Although her time barely missed making the cut for finals, the Bulldog freshman was ready for her evening swim. Hoover went out strong and dropped three more seconds and won the consolation heat with her time of 5:04.13.

Hoover finished ninth overall, but her consolation time would have been good for sixth in the finals. She took charge right from the start of the 20-length race.

"That was my goal. I sprinted out to get ahead," she said. "I don't usually go out that fast. The way I train both high school and with York (YMCA) is pace myself to get there."

All smiles after her swim, Hoover said her first PIAA meet was a learning experience and she has a lot to look forward too over the next three years and the new approach will likely pay some dividends.

"The past couple of seasons I was scared to go out too fast. Now I did it and dropped time, and I am OK," she said.

YAIAA boys' swims: West York's Reed French (5:07.09) was 30th in the 500 free ... York Suburban teammates Will Massey (55.23) and Nolan Walker (1:01.96) finished 18th in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke respectively. Walker was just .10 off qualifying for the consolation finals ... Suburban's Alex Fridman, Kyle Posenau, Massey and Walker combined for a 3:22.09, which was good for a 19th place finish in the 400 free relay. Gettysburg suffered a disqualification in the preliminaries and did not advance to the evening.

Boys' diving record falls: Trinity's Bradley Buchter scored a 533.05 on the diving board to not only win the AA boys competition, but topped Dan Roberts' (Fairview) record of 496.45, set last year.

Swimmers of the meet: Mars Area's Margaret Gruber and Phil Emerson of Franklin Area were chosen as the girls' and boys' swimmers of the Class AA meet.

Boys' champions: By winning the final event (400 free relay), Salisbury captured the boys' AA team championship by eight points over Franklin Area, which came in second in the 400 relay.

Salisbury finished with 151 points.
