HERSHEY -- Headlocks are one of the first pinning techniques young wrestlers learn because they are fairly simple to teach and can be executed from all three positions.
Thursday in the preliminary round of the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships, Central York's Dylan Chatterton hit it from the neutral position, while Spring Grove's Zack Clingan completed it from the top position.
Both locals registered pins off the move to earn spots in this afternoon's quarterfinal round -- set to start at 1:30 p.m. at Giant Center -- and keep themselves in state title contention.
That duo will be joined in the championship bracket by five other YAIAA grapplers who were victorious in the preliminary round. They include the Dallastown pair of Tanner Druck (152) and Cooper Deller (182), along with Clingan's Rocket teammate Mason Bentzel (145), Kennard-Dale's Chance Marsteller (160) and West York's Kyle Narber (170).
Three other league wrestlers -- Eastern York senior Alex Cooley and Dallastown juniors Rodney Sunday (126) and Wes Hoover (138) -- bounced back from opening-round losses to post consolation wins and remain in the medal hunt.
Chatterton was trailing North Hills' Gage Curry, 1-0, when he tossed the District 7 wrestler to his back. After not initially getting back points, the Panther freshman was able to adjust his grip, making it tighter, and then score the fall with 34 seconds remaining in the second period.
"My intention is never to go big," said Chatterton, now 29-2. "It's one of those things you live by, you die by."
Clingan also was losing when he pulled out a headlock. Pennridge's Ben Ross was up 4-2 and chose bottom for the third period. As the District 1 competitor was trying to escape, Clingan was able to grab his head. Ross, who came into the match 41-1, tried to roll through and briefly looked to put the Rocket junior on his back.
But instead, Clingan, fourth at districts two weeks ago, settled his weight back and put the Southeast Regional champ on his back, registering the fall 32 seconds into the final period.
"He had really good hips. ... I saw (his head), so I took it," said the 40-6 junior.
After scoring just one point in his last three District 3 matches, Bentzel needed just 49 seconds to take down Easton's Kyler Kilpatrick. The Rocket junior then added a two-point nearfall for a 4-0 lead that eventually turned into a 5-2 decision.
"The past two weeks coach (Tony) Miller had been really getting on me about scoring more," said Bentzel (40-4). "We watched tape on (Kilpatrick). I knew what I had to do on my feet, and I did it perfectly."
The most exciting preliminary win turned in by a league grappler came from Narber.
Winning by a point in the waning seconds, Pocono Mountain East's Ernest Fogle took a shot on Narber (28-10) and locked around a leg, looking to finish the match there. But the Bulldog junior was able to maneuver behind the Cardinal wrestler and finally break the hold on his leg, getting the takedown just as the buzzer sounded.
"I knew I needed two to win. I was nervous when he had it locked (on my leg). You've just got to keep going," said Narber, a fourth-place finisher in the District 3 tournament.
Druck joined Clingan and Narber as the only fourth-place finishers from the district tournament to win a preliminary match. However, Druck's victory was not nearly as dramatic.
After a scoreless first period against Nick Giangiulio of Perkiomen Valley, the Wildcat senior got an escape midway through the second period and then notched a takedown with just 20 seconds left in the period. Three back points early in the third period clinched what became a 7-3 decision for the 34-7 Druck.
Deller's victory against General McLane's Chris Laird was even more dominating.
A pair of takedowns and a two-point nearfall staked the Wildcat senior to a 6-1 lead after the first period. Deller cruised from there, racking up three more takedowns and two more back points for a 15-4 major decision.
"It was crucial getting a big lead," said Deller, 33-4. "Once I got the first takedown, I just knew I was better than him on my feet."
Marsteller, the two-time defending state champion, recorded the quickest fall of the Class AAA prelims, dropping Delaware Valley's Lucas Markowitz in just 42 seconds. The next fastest was at 220, where Shaun Heist of Parkland pinned Hasan Alic of Carlisle in 49 seconds. They were the only two sub-one minute falls in the round.
Spring Grove's Derek Carlisle (113) and South Western's Aram Moffitt (220) saw their seasons end Thursday evening with a pair of losses each.
