MECHANICSBURG -- Although their races were nothing alike, Niki Price and Trevor Hine kept the YAIAA's solid performance going during the first day of the District 3 Class AAA swimming championships.

Both held their top seeds and earned district championships after taking home gold medals in their respective individual events from the natatorium at Cumberland Valley High School.

Price, a junior from Northeastern, swam a 55.62 to win the girls' 100 butterfly by an impressive margin of 1.49 seconds over Paige Daniel of Manheim Central.

"Swimming with my club, I have a lot of experience and usually perform well under pressure," Price said. "I was excited. I didn't shave, taper or (racing) suit for this meet."

It was Price's first trip to districts. An outstanding club swimmer, she joined the high school team and is thrilled with that decision.

"It was so much fun to be part of the high school team," she said. "I knew girls were going to go fast. There is a lot of good competition. I have been swimming against some of these girls since I was little."

Hine was in a different situation. Although he entered Friday as the No. 1 seed in the boys' 200 individual medley, his main competition was coming from Hershey star Shota Nagano.

And Nagano led throughout the race, until the final turn of the freestyle. Hine bounced off the wall, caught Nagano at mid-pool and touched him out for gold with a 1:53.25.

"That last 50 was all I had left," Hine said. "I knew I was catching up to him, I didn't want to look and check. I was just hoping for the best. I was happy, it was my first (individual) race and I had a good time, dropped almost two seconds."

Hine is the Wildcats first district gold medal winner since Reggie Shearer.

Teammate Mason Tate medaled with a seventh-place finish in 1:59.82, finally breaking the two-minute barrier.

"It was definitely in my mind," Tate said. "I was trying to keep up with the guy next to me. I dropped a second from my (YAIAA) meet time."

The good friends were also a part of the Wildcats' 200 medley relay that started the meet by winning a silver medal. Noah Brockway and Corey Stauffer rounded out the foursome that swam a 1:38.03.

Dallastown junior Ashton Hensel (22.11) placed seventh in the 50 free. He and Stauffer combined with Braxton Erne and Steven Paine for a bronze medal time of 1:27.03 in the 200 free relay.

That swim made the Wildcats the only boys team with two relays guaranteed to go to the PIAA meet in two weeks after the first day of districts.

As expected, Hershey leads the team competition with 249 points, with Cumberland Valley (151) and Dallastown (138.50) next in line.

Other YAIAA AAA standouts: Dover got the girls meet started when the foursome of Summer Dacheux, Bree Link, Aniella Janosky and Nicole Smith swam a 1:49.89 and finished fourth.

Dallastown's Alyssa Bixler, Julia Casolo, Justina Thornley and Erica Wise swam a 1:37.62 in the 200 free relay, winning a bronze medal.

With a great performance from substitute Morgan Staub, Dover placed seventh in the 200 free relay as all three of these girls relays set records for their respective schools.
