Hanover's Ian Brown, right, grapples with Annville-Cleona's Jeff Inman during their 132-pound championship match in the District 3 Class AA Wrestling Championships at Hersheypark Arena on Saturday. Brown won the title, 6-0. (FOR THE EVENING SUN --- CHRIS KNIGHT)

Round one didn't go well for Tristan Sponseller, but he may have two second chances.

The Bermudian Springs High junior lost 11-3 to Brandywine Heights's Peter Renda in the 170-pound championship of the District 3 Class AA Tournament Saturday at Hersheypark Arena. Sponseller will likely wrestle Renda this week at the PIAA Class AA Southeast Region Tournament and potentially at the PIAA Class AA Championships.

The potential roadblock comes after Sponseller moved down after wrestling at 182.

"He could've went either weight class," Eagles coach Dave McCollum said. "We just felt we could make 172 (pounds) comfortably. As his coach, I feel he's probably one of the top two '70-pounders in the state."

No. 1 -- unfortunately for Sponseller -- is likely Renda, a North Carolina recruit ranked seventh nationally by InterMat Wrestling and atop the PA Power Wrestling 170 rankings, one spot ahead of Sponseller.

Sponseller said an illness that caused him to lose six pounds, from 183 to 177, spurred his weight loss. He decided that would be a good point to lose the remainder of the weight and be one of the heavier 170-pounders.

His attempt at a district title didn't go well Saturday.

Renda scored two takedowns and three back points against one escape for Sponseller for a 7-1 lead in the first period. Renda added another point in the second before extending his lead with another three in the third, when Sponseller scored another two.

"He capitalized on a lot of my mistakes on my feet," Sponseller said. "He caught me with some moves. I had a tough time getting my hips up and getting out."

Moving to 170 also came after McCollum made a decision that 182 pounds would be tougher in the state tournament. McCollum mentioned Dakota Deslauriers, ranked No. 1 by PA Power Wrestling, and Lancaster Catholic's Stephen Loiseau beat Sponseller 5-4 earlier this season.

The Eagles coach also believes there's at least one positive in wrestling Renda.

"This is going to make him a better wrestler in the future," McCollum said. "It's going to give him a different mindset to be more competitive in the next two weeks and more competitive the next year. If Tristan wants to be the best, he has to wrestle the best.

"Our plan going down to 170-pound weight class is to hit Peter Renda three times."

For him to win a state title, Sponseller will probably have to beat Renda in one of those three potential matchups. Sponseller, who plans to start watching video soon, already knows what went wrong.

"(I need to) try to work my offense more, not let him work his moves," Sponseller said. "Keep him on his heels, wrestle my match instead of his."

Shafer head of tough class: Hanover's Tyler Shafer finally achieved his goal of winning a district title.

"It really means a lot to me to finally get here and get first," he said. "I guess junior year was the year."

Shafer beat Bermudian Springs's Austin Jackson 11-9 in the 138-pound championship. The victory comes in a bracket dominated by local wrestlers. Three Hanover-area competitors made the semifinals -- Fairfield's Wayne Wivell was the other besides Jackson -- and the championship was the only all-Hanover-area matchup.

Shafer trailed Jackson 8-6 late in the second period before earning three back points to take a 9-8 lead he wouldn't lose.

"Strength was pretty evenly matched," Shafer said. "It comes down to conditioning."
