Wednesday in the District 3 Class AA Team Wrestling semifinals, it was a different story.
Cooper's Canners were up by five points and looking to close out a victory that would earn the team a spot in the district final and an automatic berth in next week's PIAA Team Wrestling Championships.
And to make matters worse, Marines gave up two first-period takedowns to the talented freshman in their critical 126-pound match. But panic never entered the junior's mind.
"You have to keep your wits about you (when you fall behind)," he said. "You just have to wrestle a full six minutes."
Or as was the case Wednesday, a full six minutes and 53.4 seconds.
Marines registered a takedown with just 6.6 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to earn a 6-4 overtime decision over Cooper and propel the Eagles to a 37-27 victory against their archrivals.
The win moves 22-4 Bermudian, the No. 3 seed, into Saturday's district championship match against two-time defending champion Boiling Springs. The top-seeded Bubblers (16-1) hammered Schuylkill Valley, 51-18, in their semifinal Wednesday evening.
The title tilt will be contested at 11 a.m. at the Spartan Center on the campus of Milton Hershey School. Both teams will participate in next week's state tournament by virtue of reaching the final.
Marines found himself down 4-1 after the first period. An escape and a takedown of his own in the second period tied the bout at four. The three-year starter then rode Cooper the whole third period, narrowly missing a couple of backpoint opportunities, to send it to the one-minute overtime period.
In the extra time, Cooper got off two decent shots. The second one Marines was able to counter, getting in on a leg and then working around behind the Canner grappler for the winning points.
"He got me twice with a low double leg. I was a little too high so I just had to get lower," Marines said. "In the overtime, I just defended his shot and then reshot off of it to get the points to win the match."
Bermudian's participation in the rest of the team postseason was looking shaky after Biglerville's Brady Mentzer registered a fall over Bayley Oberlander at the 2:42 mark of the 106-pound weight class. The Eagle freshman had earned a 7-3 decision the first time the two faced off.
According to Canner coach Bob Gano, Wednesday's result came from a different attitude Mentzer took to the mat.
"We anticipated (getting a pin) the first time," Gano said. "Brady really showed up and got aggressive. It was a nice match on his part."
Bermudian coach Dave McCollum credited Mentzer with making him a bit more nervous this time around.
"You have to give Mentzer credit. He wrestled his heart out and took it to (Oberlander)," he said.
More good things happened for Biglerville (24-3) at 120 where Canner sophomore Brock Asper saved three team points, giving up a regular decision to Dalton Becker. Becker had pinned Asper in their previous meeting.
However, the Marines' thriller paired with Jake Ford's fall at 132 and a forfeit at 138, sent Bermudian to its second straight district final appearance.
"I'm real pleased. We're peaking at the right time," McCollum said. "This is the best practice you can get to go into the state tournament."
