South Western High head coach Nate Brodbeck did not want any more sleepless nights like the one he had Friday after his team suffered a loss at the hands of Central York, a loss in which the Mustangs' effort and intensity could have been questioned.

That was why on Saturday Brodbeck had his team watch the tape from Friday's game so they could see where their deficiencies were.

The time in the film room paid off as the Mustangs upended Delone Catholic (6-4) 68-45 in a battle of cross-town rivals.

A night after seniors Parker Bean and Mike Duffy accounted for 42 of their team's 48 points, the Mustangs received a much more balanced effort in which eight players chipped in points.

"Duffy and I talked to the guys a lot before the game," Bean said. "We just reinforced to them that they were talented enough to play at this level and that we needed every guy to step up if we were going to win."

The Mustangs did just that, offensively and defensively. A day after allowing Central to score 58 points on nine 3-pointers, the Mustang defense clamped down and held Delone to 45 points and only three buckets from behind the arc.

"I am so proud of the way our guys responded tonight," Brodbeck said.

In a physical game that got scrappy at times, the Mustangs stood toe-to-toe with the Squires and refused to relent to their pressure.

Down 15-12 early in the second quarter, the Mustangs used a bucket by Scott Hess to ignite a 14-2 run that put South Western ahead 26-17, a lead they would never relinquish.

"Scott hess stepped up for us tonight. We shared the ball very well," Brodbeck said. "Our guys realized that they didn't play well last night and so they knew they had to respond."

Parker Bean led all scorers with 29 points, including two ferocious dunks on fast breaks.

"This was a huge win for us," Bean said. "Last night's game falls on senior leadership. We made sure that didn't happen tonight. Every single guy stepped up tonight and played big."

Duffy carried the momentum for South Western into the half as he nailed a huge 3-pointer from well beyond the arc to send the Mustangs into the half with a 31-23 lead.

"That was awesome," Duffy said about the three. "It is awesome with the gym packed and the student section saying stuff to you. It gets us fired up and you saw what ended up happening tonight."

Devon Moore led the Squires with 16 points and Brett Smith added 15.

But it was the all-around team defensive intensity that had Duffy and Bean most proud.

"That intensity goes to the coaches," Duffy said. "They had us ready to play today and let us know that last night was not acceptable. We definitely brought it tonight."

In the girls' contest, Delone (9-2) upended South Western 56-36.

A newly implemented 1-3-1 halfcourt zone helped the Squirettes force South Western into turnovers all night long that led to easy Delone baskets.

"I thought we did a great job in the zone tonight," Delone head coach Gerry Eckenrode said. "Our girls have picked it up well and it put us in a lot of very good positions offensively."

Led by Bethany Ball's 19 points, Delone, eight in the second quarter, Delone took a 24-19 lead into the half.

South Western (3-5) battled back out of the half and cut the lead to as close to two points at 26-24 before Delone went on a 13-0 run in a span of 2:36, extending the lead to 39-24, a lead that South Western could not overcome.

Jenna Hoffnagle led South Western with 15 points in a losing effort.
