HERSHEY -- After 12 great weeks, the Bermudian Springs High defense collapsed.
The Eagles allowed 449 yards in a 44-0 loss to Wyomissing in the District 3 Class AA football championship Friday night in front of 1,861 fans at Hersheypark Stadium. They had allowed just 86 points entering the game and eight or fewer points 10 times.
"We just rallied to the ball so well this year," Eagles coach Jon Defoe said. "We didn't have one standout stalwart defender. We didn't give up big plays typically. Any time you do that,
The Eagles (12-1) were facing a strong offense and were without starting linebacker Zach Stroup and defensive back Michael Moore. Stroup broke his left collarbone last week against Biglerville, and Moore was limited to just offense after suffering a concussion.
"It certainly was a challenge," Defoe said, "but it didn't change this outcome."
Wyomissing (13-0) took advantage of the Eagles' missing players.
The Spartans, who entered averaging 40.1 points per game and posted a season-high 70 against Kutztown, scored at least 30 points for the 12th time. Much of their production came from the starters.
Spartans senior and Notre Dame verbal recruit Alex Anzalone had three rushing touchdowns in the first half, but he barely edged teammate Justin Causa in yardage -- 120-115. Mason Smith added 83 yards in seven carries.
The final numbers were scarier than any calculus test. The Spartans rushed 22 times for 329 yards -- an average of 15 yards per carry, or a first down and halfway to another -- and added a 22-yard touchdown catch by senior Spencer Lloyd.
By comparison, the Eagles had just 100, 18 via rushes, by halftime and finished with 127. They hadn't allowed more than 21 points this season but had given up that many barely six minutes into the game.
"Honestly, we just have better personnel than they do this year," Spartans coach Bob Wolfrum said. "Right now, we're blessed with a lot of talent. There's very few times where we didn't go on the field where we weren't better than the other team."
The Spartans turned to their backups -- or, in some cases, the backups to the backups -- who accumulated another 98 yards in the second half to raise the figure to 449. Scott McAvoy scored the lone touchdown of the second half, a 19-yard rush with 11:07 left in the game.
Moore, who played just quarterback as a precautionary move despite passing all of his post-concussion tests, could only watch.
"I wanted to be out there so bad," he said. "We tackled phenomenally in the first 12 games. Tonight, we didn't tackle so well. We missed a lot of tackles. They're big, but we need to tackle better. It's definitely very difficult (to replace players on defense) over a five-day span, but you got to roll with it."
The Eagles last made the District 3 championship game when it beat Littlestown in 1998. Wyomissing, which lost the title game the last two years, won its sixth championship.
"We're a work in progress," Defoe said. "Frankly, they're what we aspire to be at this point. We got to learn from this, and our guys have to go to work and tell them this is where
