HERSHEY -- York Suburban's Olivia Gettle was in second place 200 yards from the finish of Wednesday's District 3 Class AA girls' cross country championship race.
As she headed down the stretch of what used to be the 10th fairway of Hershey's Parkview golf course, Gettle caught and passed Palmyra's Maria Tukis.
Then what could have been a disaster struck. With less than 100 yards to go, Gettle hit what runners call "the wall," stumbled and fell. As Tukis surged back ahead, Gettle got up and headed for the finish line. A few yards closer, she
"She ran out of gas," Trojans coach Dan VanHouwe said. "It's a tough course with a lot of hills. The hills beat you up."
Beat her up, maybe. Beat her, no.
Somehow Gettle found her way back to her feet and managed to cross the finish line third, a second ahead of fourth-place finisher Olivia Farabaugh of Palmyra.
Tukis and Farabaugh led Palmyra to a first-place team finish. But inspired by Gettle's gutsy effort, Suburban placed two more runners -- eighth place Emma Leik and 11th place Samantha Gehly -- in the top 20 and earned a trip to states for the second year in a row with a second-place team finish.
"It's really truly a blessing," said Gehly, a senior who will be making her third trip to the PIAA meet. "Everybody kicked butt and went all out. It's great seeing all the hard work pay off."
Gehly qualified as an individual as a sophomore. Going as a team is better, she said.
"It's a lot more fun. We all work together as a team," Gehly said.
That team spirit was key for Suburban. Running as a pack for much of the race, their No. 5 finisher, Danielle Cardone, was just 1:38 behind Gettle. Their No. 4 girl, Lauren Shrader, finished 21st, which would have qualified for states as an individual had the Trojans not made it as a team.
"We work as a team," VanHouwe said. "Everything we do, we do as a team. There is no superstar."
For Delone Catholic, which won the girls' Class A team race to also qualify for states, there was a superstar -- coach Scotty Watt, who is retiring after this season.
"The team win means so much. It's our coach's last year," said Delone freshman Kate Mowery, who finished first with a time of 20:54.
Sarah Bischoff (fourth) and Andrea Resciniti (eighth) also finished in the top 10 for the Squirettes, who sported 'Win With Watts' T-shirts over their singlets before the race.
Delone finished with 39 points to edge second-place York Catholic. Only the top team qualifies for the state meet in Class A.
Fairfield's Kaitlyn Beckham placed second in Class A to also qualify for states.
Kennard-Dale sophomore Kayla White finished sixth in AA to move on. Bermudian Springs' Rachel Crane finished 22nd to qualify.
In Class AAA girls, Central York senior Kelsey Ibarra (fourth), Red Land junior Makena Felts (11th) and Red Lion senior Amanda Wivell (18th) all advanced to the state meet.
