Certain losses are harder to overcome than others, especially at this time of the fall sports season.
The Red Lion field hockey team lost to Dallastown in a shootout in the YAIAA field hockey championship last Thursday. Heading into Tuesday's District 3 Class AAA first-round game, the Lions had suffered just three losses -- all to Dallastown.
The effects of the recent loss lingered Tuesday, as No. 5 Red Lion could not find the net against No. 12 Wilson at Northeastern High School.
The Lions also had a hard time containing Wilson's Avery Marz, who scored all of the Bulldogs' goals in the 3-0 Wilson win.
"We talked about 'you know we have to move on,'" Red Lion head coach Carol Gillmen said of rebounding from the county championship loss. "After seeing the team play, it seemed that we weren't as fast as we were in the regular season and in some of the things we executed."
Behind Marz's hat trick, the Bulldogs (14-7) advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal round.
"I think the passes were the biggest part. My teammates gave me great passes, so the fact they could get them to me was great," Marz said.
All three of Marz's goals had an assist credited to it.
Mary Shea Kelly-Buckley assisted on the first Wilson goal at 13:53 of the first half, with Maddie Klee helping out for the second goal less than three minutes later.
Molly Zinn found Marz for her third and final goal with 3:52 to play in the game.
"She's our cherry-picker," Wilson head coach Kim Underwood said of Marz. "We have lots of girls with lots of goals, so we kind of split it across the board. She does well up front. She's fast, she has field awareness and game sense."
Red Lion had five shots on goal for the game, and Gabi Uberti made five saves for the Lions, who finish the season at 16-4.
"Last year we won in the first round of districts, and you need to get it done each game," Gillmen said. "Wilson was a better team tonight than we were."
