Fairfield High's Isaiah Logue is trying to do something this week that hasn't been done in eight years.
He is trying to bring home the Hanover area's first state golf medalist since Mike Magalski, from Spring Grove, finished third in 2004.
Logue's path to the state tournament has been a fairly smooth one with a late bump in the road. Logue finished as top medalist in five of the six YAIAA Division III matches. He finished first in the YAIAA Class AA Individual Championship and then took first in the District 3 Class AA tournament.
Last week in the East Regional, Rogue experienced his first real bump of the season.
Playing at Golden Oaks Gulf Club in Fleetwood, he shot an 80, which was good enough for 14th place. The top 16 places advance to the PIAA Championships, a two-day tournament today and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
But Logue was not happy with his score.
"Isaiah was very disappointed with how he finished," Fairfield head coach John Ridge said. "I really think Isaiah overcompensated for the wind. He struggled putting and his club selection failed."
All things that he worked on in the week leading to the state tournament.
"I worked hard on my iron shots, chipping and putting," Logue said.
Ridge and Logue last week worked with York Catholic head coach and Heritage Hills Golf pro Bill Brander.
"We played a practice round with him and Isaiah played very well," Ridge said.
Logue also went there on Sunday and played a practice round.
"It went well," Logue said. "I stayed after a little bit to get my club choice figured out."
The pressure of playing in the state tournament will not be a factor for Logue, who finished 16th in last year's state tournament with a two-day total of 155.
Logue also competes in the American Junior Golf Association, where he is ranked 48th in the class of 2014 and 156th overall.
"I worked really hard to get in the state tournament," Logue said. "If I am going to finish well, I must finish the two days at even par. That is my goal for the first day, to shoot even."
