More boys' soccer: Susquehannock knocked off York Catholic in the opening round to reach the semifinals.York, PA -
South Western coach Clayton Wilcox better not be too attached to his hairstyle.
After the Mustangs upset a previously unbeaten York Suburban team Saturday night in the opening round of the YAIAA boys' soccer tournament, the players were chanting for the Mohawk he had promised them before the 2-1 victory.
Perhaps he was looking for the haircut all along, though.
"I knew they are a good team, but I don't think it was an upset," Wilcox said. "I know we are a good team too."
The Mustangs showed it on Saturday.
They netted the first goal when Lucas Small fielded a cross from Justin Zinneman. Small quickly punched it into the net in the 10th minute.
"We were the underdogs. No one thought we were going to beat Suburban, but we came out and did what we had to do," junior David Penarrieta said.
And they went ahead for good in the 61st minute, when Penarrieta got whatever piece of his upper body he could on the ball, just enough to pop it over the goaltender. Penarrieta said the ball connected with his head and his shoulder.
"When you get down there in front of the goal and sometimes you just try to get a piece of it, try to get it back on frame and hope," Wilcox said.
And get a
At least that is what worked for Suburban's lone goal in the 41st minute.
South Western goaltender Adam Alton leaped and grabbed Andrei Kin's header at its highest point, but when he landed hard on the ground, the ball popped out of his hands and rolled backward into the goal.
"Sometimes you get a lucky bounce like that," Wilcox said. "Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get unlucky. Adam made a great play on the ball and it just bounced out. We've had that happen in our favor and against us this year."
Silver linings aren't exactly what the Trojans wanted to hear after suffering their first loss of the season, but as nice as advancing would be in the YAIAA tournament would be, district play begins for them next week.
"I told the guys this is bonus time," Suburban coach Tony Kowalewski said. "It would have been great to win a couple and maybe win the whole thing, but we were 16-0 in the regular season. We still have that in our pocket. This was a tough game. We knew it would be a tough game and we had opportunities to win."
