The Canners were huddled together, following perhaps their biggest -- and certainly their most breathtaking -- win of the season, a 21-20 overtime triumph at York Catholic on Friday night. Their white jerseys were caked with sweat and mud.
Ramos, Biglerville's third-year coach, paused to take it all in.
"Biglerville kids have been through their share of defeats," Ramos said. "We feel like so far it's been something for every Canner to be a part of."
The Canners needed every bit of grit and guile they could muster on Friday night -- along with a few wayward kicks by their opponents. The end result kept Biglerville (5-1, 4-1) in the thick of the YAIAA Division III race.
It also dealt a crushing blow to the Irish (3-3, 3-2), who were left to rue a series of wasted opportunities during their homecoming defeat. Among the miscues were a trio of missed kicks by defense-shredding quarterback James Dougherty -- two potential go-ahead field goals in the fourth quarter and an extra point in overtime.
The last of those three set up Biglerville's winning sequence in the extra session. On a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, running back Joe Hurda plunged over the left guard to tie the game at 20.
Biglerville sophomore kicker Jorden Trostel then sent the game-winning extra point booming through the uprights.
"His nickname is J.T. Money," Ramos said of Trostel. "He's money. He's automatic."
"Our motto all year has been 'Finish.' And we did it." said Hurda, who paced the Canners with 79 yards on 17 carries. "Coach said before the game it was their homecoming, our party."
All that was preceded by a drama-packed fourth quarter -- one which seemed so many times as if it would tip in York Catholic's direction.
The Irish trailed, 7-6, coming into the quarter, before
Dougherty finished 23-of-37 passing for 311 yards and a touchdown. He also fired a pair of interceptions -- two of three Irish turnovers, compared to none for Biglerville.
The Canners needed a spark. During their Saturday film session last week, one of Biglerville's assistants suggested they try a halfback pass against the Irish.
"I'm not one for gimmick plays, because my opinion is if you run gimmick plays you don't run your stuff very well," Ramos said. "But I said, 'You know what, I'm not going to call you crazy because I kind of like it.' "
On their first offensive play following the Irish's score, quarterback Tanner Cool pitched to running back Jordan Wenk, who rolled right and lofted a deep ball into the arms of Jacob Heiland. The receiver shedded a would-be tackler and raced 78 yards for a tying touchdown.
"Everybody was going nuts," Wenk said.
York Catholic still had two more chances to win in regulation, but Dougherty's field goals attempts -- 25 and 27 yards -- both leaked right.
The Irish struck first in overtime, when Dougherty took a first-down snap and swept right for a 10-yard score. His extra point was wide though, pulled to the left this time.
That opened the door for the Canners to earn a signature win.
