Font ResizeBoeckel was approved as the Trojans' new head coach by the York Suburban school board last month. He becomes the program's third head coach in 43 years, following Joe Hasenfuss (1969-99) and Tom Triggs (1999-2012).
Boeckel, 33, spent last season as the Trojans junior varsity coach. Before that, he was an assistant for three seasons at York Catholic. He's also a Suburban graduate who played under Hasenfuss.
"I'm not coming in here and trying to revamp the York Suburban system," Boeckel said Friday. "I have large shoes to fill. But having gotten the opportunity to work with them the last year -- it's not a lot of time but it's a tremendous amount that I've learned."
York Suburban athletic director Rich Peterson said the school received several outside inquiries about the position. But Boeckel's ties to the school and the program -- he lives in the district and has two young children -- were major selling points, in addition to Boeckel's basketball experience.
"We've been blessed to not have many coaches in the program," Peterson said. "We liked the fact that he came in and we had a chance to see him up close and personal. ... We think he's going to be a long-term coach."
Boeckel added he expects Hasenfuss to return as an assistant, a role he held under Triggs the last six seasons.
The Trojans will return just one starter from last year's team, which went 23-6 and qualified for the state playoffs.
"We'll be young," Boeckel said, "but I'm excited about the energy that we'll bring."
