From jubilation and anger in the Class AA final to a reserved feeling of happiness and tears in the Class AAA title tilt, the matches had it all.
Hanover's Joel Garrett swept top-seeded Cole Herzing of Biglerville in the Class AA final, 7-5, 6-1, and made a dream come true.
"It feels incredible," the second-seeded Garrett said. "I had feelings in the beginning of the year that I was going to be a really good player this year. I even did projects in school about me winning the county championship. I had butterflies for about a week straight."
On the other side of the court, Herzing, who wasn't even ranked in last season's tournament, was disappointed at the outcome.
"I was a little upset at first, but I just got to get over it," Herzing said. "I still have doubles and team districts. I still have singles districts."
The Class AAA championship -- a back-and-forth affair between South Western teammates Mack Meyer and Anthony Miserendino -- was the last of the day's five matches to finish.
Forced to a third set, Miserendino, the No. 7 seed, rebounded from a second-set loss and held off Meyer, 6-4, to capture his first title against his longtime friend, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
"It's really hard to play your own teammate," Miserendino said.
Meyer, the No. 3 seed, had to fight back tears after the loss to his close friend.
"He played really well and I'm happy for him," Meyer said.
After dropping a hard-fought first set, Meyer battled back by winning the final five games in the second set to bring the game even. Meyer changed rackets a few times during the second set to try and get a better handle on his shots.
"The other rackets I just couldn't get much of a rhythm with," Meyer said. "I guess the racket helped and I focused a little bit more."
In the deciding set, Miserendino took the first game and led 5-3, before finishing off the win.
"I was really nervous at first," the junior said of going into the third set. "I didn't want to be up a set and then just drop it like that. I've lost matches like that before. I just told myself to come back out with intensity and give it everything you have. All the marbles are on the table."
For the second straight year, the singles crown belongs to South Western.
"I was mostly excited (about the match), just because our school could do this," Meyer said. "That I got to do it with Anthony was special."
In the AA title match, both players battled nerves in the first set before Garrett separated himself in the second set.
"Whoever got the first set was going to have the biggest momentum," Garrett said.
Garrett rolled his thrilling 7-5 first-set win into the second set en route to a league title.
"He was playing wonderfully and just confusing me with different shots," Herzing said. "I just wasn't catching on very well."
In the Class AAA third-place match, Dallastown's Adam Gante beat Central's Ryan Keffer, 7-5, 6-0.
York Suburban's Michael Hogg held off Susquehannock's Kaltrin Bullaj, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the Class AA third-place match.
