Kingpin: Chambersburg’s Jimmy Hughes, top, rides Hunter Kyner of Shippensburg in a 125-pound semifinal bout Saturday at the Class AAA Section I Tournament. Hughes won 5-1 and went on to capture his fourth sectional title.
Hughes wins 4th title

Of note: Chambersburg's Jimmy Hughes won the 125-pound championship at the Class AAA Section I tournament, his fourth sectional title ... The Trojans' Tanner Shoap (103) and Dawson Peck (215) and Waynesboro's Marvin Gaskill (285) were runners-up ... 11 area wrestlers qualified for districts.

MECHANICSBURG -- Some things just never get old.

For Chambersburg wrestler Jimmy Hughes, winning a championship at the Class AAA Section I Tournament has become a routine to follow every February.

It happened again Saturday night at Mechanicsburg High School, when the Trojan senior defeated Kyle Hejmanowski of Northern 6-0 to earn the 125-pound title -- his fourth Section I title.

Hughes said, "(Winning the fourth title) was a goal and it is an accomplishment, but I was expecting it. I just need to seal the deal next week."

Two of Hughes' Trojan teammates -- freshmen Tanner Shoap (103) and sophomore Dawson Peck (215) -- also reached the finals, but came up short. The other area wrestler in the finals was Marvin Gaskill of Waynesboro at 285, but he was also defeated.

In addition to the four finalists from the county, seven more wrestled back to place third and earn a trip the District 3 Tournament this coming weekend at Hersheypark Arena.

Those seven included sophomore Todd Meyers of James Buchanan (130), senior Dylan Schaeffer of Greencastle-Antrim (160), senior Todd DeWalt of G-A (189), and Waynesboro's Jacob Smith (sr.,

112), Richie Scott (soph., 119), Trey Andree (soph., 135) and Shane McFerren (sr., 215).

Hughes (28-2) last year became the first Chambersburg wrestler to win three sectional titles, so this year's championship just added to his legacy.

He produced a complete effort in the final, scoring a single-leg takedown in the first period, gaining a reversal in the second and another takedown in the third for the 6-0 victory.

"Jimmy had a great tournament," Chambersburg coach Doug Rine said. "That match in the finals was the best he's had in a month."

The Trojans' Shoap had all kinds of problems with Dustin Rook of Big Spring at 103. Rook started off with a five-point move from his feet and it snowballed into an 11-0 major decision.

"He has a lot of reach on me," said Shoap (29-3), who lost 5-0 to Rook earlier this year. "I wrestle him in our club and he knows my moves. I wanted to give him a better match, but when he got ahead 5-0 it changed things."

Rine said, "It's a contrast of styles and so far we've been unable to score on him."

Peck (27-5) took on Travis Friend of Cumberland Valley and fell 12-7. Friend hit an ankle pick takedown to score a few seconds in and his second takedown resulted in a four-point move when he took Peck toward his back and Peck signaled to stop the match because his breath was cut off. That made it 6-2.

Rine said, "Dawson wrestled the fourth-ranked kid in the state tough. I liked it when Friend tried to bully him, Dawson fought back."

"I was hoping it would be closer, but I'd need everything to go my way to beat him," Peck said. "But I really did want to wrestle him. I think it helped my confidence."

The key move in the 285-pound final came late in the second when Carlisle's Gavin Nickel countered a good takedown shot by Gaskill and spun behind. That and a stalling point helped him to a 5-3 victory.

A total of 21 area wrestlers fought their way into the afternoon semifinals. But it was pretty much a round to forget.

Of the 21, only four were victorious. Of those four wins, three came against area opponents. Of the 17 defeats, five came to lower-seeded wrestlers.

Two of the toughest losses were by Greencastle's Schaeffer and DeWalt.

Schaeffer was tied 2-2 with Northern's Adam Geiger with time running out. But when he tried a desperate shot, Geiger spun behind for a takedown with seconds to spare for a 4-2 win.

DeWalt hit a takedown to go ahead 4-3 in the third, but Bryton Barr of Mechanicsburg escaped with 12 ticks left to tie it up. In overtime, Barr took DeWalt to his back for a five-pointer and a 9-4 win.

Blue Devil coach Fred Yelton said, "Dylan and Todd both had close semifinal losses, but they did come back to win two matches and get to districts. That's double the number we had last year.

"We had some higher expectations than that, but on the positive side, we were a lot more competitive here than last year."

JB's Todd Meyers faced Carlisle's Anthony Taylor for third place and all Taylor had done all day was shoot for throws. Meyers stayed away and ended up putting Taylor on his back twice before pinning him in 2:14.

"We talked about a strategy with Todd to make sure he didn't caught," Rocket coach Matt Gordon said. "We told him a double-leg shot off the whistle was the way to go and Todd made it work.

"I was disappointed we only got one through. Trevor (Meyers) got behind 4-0 and at this level it's tough come back from that."

Trevor Meyers rallied against Big Spring's Wyatt Keck in the bout for third at 119, but he couldn't turn Keck late and had to settle for a 4-3 defeat.

Waynesboro was only 1-2 in the semifinals, but the Indians were dynamite in the consolations and put six into the consy finals and went 4-2.

"I was surprised we came back to get (sixth) place," Waynesboro coach Eric Mowen said. "But we did well in the wrestlebacks and those four thirds got us the points we needed. I was happy -- we have five in districts instead of the three we had last year."

Shippensburg put two into the consy finals, Jared Furry at 103 and Tyler Fairchild at 285, but both lost by a single point.

Hound coach Melvin Gray said, "We had a real good season, but we didn't compete here like I thought we could. I think some kids need to change their priorities for next year."

Cumberland Valley rallied in the final round, going 3-1, to nip Mechanicsburg (1-4 finals) by three points for the team title.
