It happened moments after Spring Grove junior Logen Wisner's meet-clinching pin at 160 pounds. As Wisner started toward his jubilant teammates, he raised two fingers raised in the air -- a rebuke, he later said, of those who deemed the Rockets unworthy of their No. 2 district seed. That was the big moment, the match that stonewalled No. 7 Middletown's comeback bid and secured Spring Grove's slot in today's Class AAA semifinals.
Hidden beneath it, Spring Grove coach Tony Miller said, were a slew of other results that made that image possible.
"Logan did a great job, but there were multiple points in that lineup," Miller said. "Even when we lost, we didn't give bonus points away."
Sure enough, the Rockets' ability to rack up bonus points -- while denying Middleton the same commodity -- was enough to secure a date with sixth-seeded Wilson (21-3) today at 4 p.m. in Milton Hershey's Copenhaver Gym. The semifinals were scheduled for Saturday, but moved up because of this weekend's impending snowstorm.
Spring Grove won eight of its 14 matches against Middletown, but secured a 5-1 edge in pins.
The Rockets reeled off three of those pins to begin the meet, bolting to a 18-0 lead behind falls from Neal Grudi (189), James Yohe (215) and Trevor Cogar (285).
"I knew they
Spring Grove had to nurse that lead later. But even when the Rockets lost, they did so productively.
Take Derek Carlisle (103) and Tyler Miller (135), who both lost by technical falls but kept two of Middletown's top wrestlers from scoring pins. Or Rockets freshman Austin Barley, who in his first varsity match limited Michael Simmons to a 9-0 major decision.
In all three cases, Tony Miller got the result he wanted.
"(Austin) wrestled an incredible match," Miller said. "He did exactly what he was supposed to do. He did a great job. Tyler, all those guys."
Middletown notched its lone pin in the night's marquee bout, when 152-pounder Bo Candelaria clamped a cradle on Dylan Wisner in the second period of their match. That result closed Spring Grove's lead to 30-27 with two matches remaining.
And that's when Logen Wisner came to the rescue.
"That gave me the drive," Logen Wisner said of his brother's loss. "To get us back the points that he gave up."
He didn't wait long, taking down Middletown's Jeremy Bailes 12 seconds into their match and twisting him into a pin 46 seconds later.
Wisner held up two fingers, and the Spring Grove students burst into a chant of "Superman" -- a reference to the lucky blue Superman T-shirt Wisner wears before every match.
"People were saying we didn't deserve a No. 2 seed." Wisner said of his gesture. "I held that up to make a statement."
Spring Grove now has little time to prepare for Wilson, which edged No. 3 Cumberland Valley, 30-29, on Thursday.
"As coaches, we're going to be busy tonight trying to get ready," Miller said.
