The York Daily Record/Sunday News has announced its 2008-09 Div. I wrestling all-stars.
WRESTLER OF THE YEAR
Clay Gable, Dallastown: The four-year Wildcat starter capped a 39-4 season with Dallastown's first PIAA wrestling gold since 1993 in the Class AAA 171-pound championship. Gable dominated Clint Morrison of Cedar Cliff, recording a 16-1, technical fall in 5:18, for the gold.
Gable earned the PIAA berth with a silver-medal performance in the District 3 championships.
ALL-STARS
Jordan Conaway, New Oxford: The Colonial 103-pounder brought home a sixth-place medal from his first PIAA championship appearance. In his second year at a starter, he placed second at districts after winning a sectional crown and three regular-season tournaments en route to a 37-5 record.
Tanner Bidelspach, Spring Grove: The Rocket 112-pounder finished third in the PIAA Class AAA the hard way, losing his first match and winning five straight bouts. The two-time state qualifier also earned a silver medal in District 3 championships and a second sectional title. His senior season record was 34-7.
Cameron Throckmorton, South Western: The sophomore grabbed his second PIAA medal in as many tries, this one coming in Class AAA 119-pound class. He advanced to Hershey with a third-place finish at districts and a repeat sectional crown, finishing the season at 26-4.
Jon Childress, Dallastown: The senior made the most of his final season, placing seventh in the PIAA Class AAA 125-pound weight class. The Wildcat earned his spot in Hershey with a runner-up finish in the District 3 championships while compiling 32 wins in 38 matches.
Drew Rebling, South Western: The Mustang 130-pounder earned his first berth in the PIAA championships with a second-place finish in the district event. A sectional championship was part of his 34-8 junior season.
Brandon Deamer, South Western: The Mustang 135-pounder finished fourth at the Class AAA District 3 tournament, falling just one win away from a state tournament spot. His 30-12 mark for the year put him into the century club for career wins.
Randy Abel, Spring Grove: The senior barely missed earning a spot in the state championships, finishing fourth in District 3 Class AAA 145-pound class. The Rocket middleweight reached his fourth sectional final, winning his third title, and his 31-5 mark for this season leaves him second in program history for career wins with 127.
Tyler Hoover, Dallastown: The Wildcat reached the Class AAA 152-pound semifinals in districts before ending his season with two straight losses to state qualifiers. The junior finished his third season in the Dallastown starting lineup with a 33-5 record and a sectional championship.
Bob Doyle, Red Lion: The senior surprised many by earning a spot in the semifinals of the District 3 Class AAA at 160. His last season for the Lions included a sectional crown and a 30-11 mark.
Phil Sprenkle, Dallastown: The undersized 189-pounder finished fourth at districts, missing out on a trip to Hershey. The sophomore, 34-7 for the season, earned the district berth with a sectional title, one year after the flu knocked him out of the postseason.
Keith Dahlheimer, Red Lion: The senior surprised everyone by bumping up two weight classes to 285 for the postseason and won the district crown at that weight. Giving up more than 30 pounds minimum in most matches, he won seven straight matches before losing in the first round of states. He earned a PIAA seventh-place medal on his way to a 38-6 mark.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Greg Sprenkle, South Western: The Mustang mentor led his senior-laden squad to a share of the Division I crown during a 15-3 season. His team advanced to the District 3 Class AAA Team Tournament semifinals, the deepest any of his teams as ever gone in that event before finishing fifth in the team standings at the District 3 Class AAA individual championships.
