MECHANICSBURG  –  Replacing a legend is never easy. But York Suburban swimming coach Craig Brennan is building his own legacy now.

Only four years after taking over for retiring iconic Trojans coach Dick Guyer, Brennan has been able to guide and motivate his squad to perfection time and time again.

At this weekend's District 3 Class AA championships, Suburban's girls proved it by winning the district team championship.

The Trojans managed 282.50 team points, placing 26.50 ahead of Schuylkill Valley -- and that was without points from diving.

Perhaps most impressive was how Suburban's fifth girls' team district title was brought home. Ahead going into the final event, the Trojan's 400 free relay team needed only to not disqualify to win it all.

That wasn't quite good enough for the foursome of Zowie Day, Carson Gross, Helen Gunn and Erin Merkle, who went out and broke a 25-year-old district record -- set by Dover -- with a swim of 3:33.79.

“He is such a good coach.

He supports us so much,” Merkle said. “It's so nice to do this for him and the coaching staff.”

“We knew we had to do everything we could. He is an amazing coach. We love him so much,” Day said. “I was really hoping we would. In the back of my mind, I knew we could.”

Brennan deflected credit, saying, “You don't replace a Dick Guyer.”

“It's the kids that earned this,” he added. “It's great to be able to give York Suburban a district championship for the swimmers, the parent and the administration.”

Earlier in the day, Merkle might have raced the perfect 500 free, turning in the only sub-five minute time en route to a more than seven second victory.

“I am ecstatic about it. That has been a goal of mine,” Merkle said. “I felt it. Mentally I was in a whole new spot. I came into districts with nothing to lose.”

Merkle left districts with four gold medals, two individual and two relays.

The Trojans won plenty of hardware on Saturday. Rebekah Buchanan (5:32.31) won an eighth-place medal in the 500 free. West York freshman Taylor Hoover scored a bronze medal in the 500 with her time of 5:10.92.

Day (54.14) placed sixth and Anna Schmittle (55.08) tied for eighth in the girls 100 freestyle, won by Delone Catholic's Victoria Griffin, who tied a district record time of 51.48.

“The whole season has been about the team,” Brennan said. “The team comes first and every single person stepped up.”

Suburban's boys had a solid second day, reaching the medal stand in the 100 backstroke when Will Massey (55.15) came in fifth, bettered by Nolan Walker's bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.73).

The two combined with Alex Fridman and Kyle Posenau to swim a 3:19.95, which came in third in the 400 free relay, only .24 out of first and .03 out of second.
