Kennard Dale's Patrick Scarborough grapples with Dover's Ross Drawbaugh during a 138-pound semifinal bout Saturday at South Western High School.

It was a performance typical of this season's Spring Grove wrestling team.

Lots of close matches, little fanfare, some program history and, in the end, another title.

The Rockets easily took the team championship of the District 3 Class AAA Section V wrestling tournament at South Western, its sixth consecutive first-place finish in the annual event that kicks off the scholastic individual postseason.

The YAIAA Division I champions qualified 11 competitors to next week's District 3 championships, going 4-for-7 in the finals with gold-medal performances from Zack Clingan (120), Dakota Laughman (132), Mason Bentzel (145) and Alex Guinn (220). The Rockets amassed 187.5 points.

"We had a great tournament. The kids wrestled really tough," Rocket coach Tony Miller said. "I was impressed with the ones who took a loss and came back to win (in consolations)."

Dallastown and South Western tied for second place, a whopping 67.5 points behind Spring Grove. Three Wildcats -- Rodney Sunday (126), Tanner Druck (152) and Cooper Deller (182) -- came away with titles, while Derek Wilson (113) and Devon Ackerman (285) won gold for the Mustangs.

Spring Grove won a large number of close bouts throughout the day, especially in the finals, where the most points scored by a Rocket wrestler was six.

Zack Clingan earned his second sectional title with a 6-2 decision over Dallastown's Nick Shields at 126. Earlier in the day, Clingan became the first junior in program history to hit the century mark in career wins.

Senior Derek Carlisle also won his 100th match for Spring Grove earlier in the day, ending a bit of a competition.

"They were in a race for it. ... It's really nice to do that at home," Miller said.

In avenging earlier losses, Bentzel and Guinn were the lone championship winners who weren't No. 1 seeds.

The No. 2-seeded Bentzel defeated West York's top-seeded Garrett Stauffer, 3-1, on a first-period takedown to win at 145. Guinn, seeded third at 220, made a third-period escape stand up as the difference in a 3-2 victory against No. 1 seed Aram Moffitt of South Western, also avenging an earlier loss.

All three Wildcat winners turned in dominating finals performances.

At 126, Sunday scored 17 straight points to earn a technical fall over West York's Noah Townsley in 4:12.

Deller recorded his third pin of the day in the 182-pound final, decking Shaheed Mitchell of Dover in 3:03. The senior's first title capped an impressive performance that featured his 100th career victory.

Druck took an early lead over Tyler Miller of Spring Grove in their 152-pound championship bout before getting the fall with 22 seconds left in the second period. It was the third sectional crown for the top seed.

Kennard-Dale's Pat Scarborough also made his third appearance in a sectional final. However, after two silver medals, the Ram junior came away with a gold this time, edging Mike Hartman of Spring Grove, 4-2, in the tiebreaker.

Tied at two, the pair wrestled a scoreless overtime period. Hartman narrowly missed a reversal at the buzzer of the first 30-second tiebreaker. Scarborough was then able to slip out the Rocket junior's grasp with just four seconds left in the second tiebreaker to earn the win.

"I was a little scared there. I knew I had to hold on," said Scarborough of the near reversal. "It feels amazing (to win). Sectionals have been driving me crazy."

Ram coach Mike Balestrini said he sees the title as a result of confidence.

"He's improved mentally this year," he said. "I think Powerade (tournament in December) was a turning point for (Scarborough). He knew he could hang with all those kids who placed."

Chance Marsteller, Scarborough's Ram teammate, and Eastern York's Alex Cooley remained unbeaten this year with championships Saturday.

Marsteller (32-0) pinned Jeb Payne of Northeastern in 28 seconds to claim the 160-pound weight class while Cooley, in his first year at the Class AAA level, spent only 50 seconds total on the mat in his two earlier wins before recording a 10-3 decision over Dallastown's Zaire Lawrence at 195.

Central York freshman Dylan Chatterton won the 106-pound crown, getting two back points in the second period for a 2-0 win over fellow ninth grader Owen Wherley of South Western.

Red Lion's Tyler Schell began his attempt for reach the state tournament again by winning the 170-pound weight class. The Lion senior narrowly beat West York's Kyle Narber, 5-4, on a third-period escape.
