NEW KINGSTOWN -- Another day at the District 3 Swimming Championships, another school record for Chambersburg freshman Kelly Hamilton.

But for a second straight day, the fast time didn't even crack the top eight in a very fast Class AAA girls competition.

On Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School, Hamilton swam 59.09 and finished ninth in the 100 backstroke. District 3 is such a fast meet, Hamilton still has an outside shot to make the PIAA meet (16 seeds are guaranteed for each event and then the next 16 fastest times also advance).

The winner was Hershey's Yurie Nakano in a time of 55.85.

Hamilton broke 1:00 for the first time this season and knocked nearly two seconds off her seed time of 1:00.80. She broke former Trojan standout Katie Hostettler's old mark of 1:00.41 set in 1998.

"She swam a great race," Trojan girls coach Donnie Miller said. "I was very happy with her time and, like I said yesterday, she could have improved in a few areas, but she had a great meet and we'll see if it's enough (to make states)."

For the Chambersburg boys, Bryton Zook had a strong day, taking 18th in the Class AAA 100 breaststroke (1:07.44) while helping the 400 freestyle relay team knock three seconds off its seed time for a 14th-place finish.

Matt Rines, Logan Haga and Jordan Metz also swam in the relay.

"I felt that Bryton did what we expected him to do in the breaststroke," Chambersburg boys coach Mark Shoap said. "I thought Matt had a great

leadoff in the relay (51 seconds) and the relay dropped time and hit the goal time we wanted. I was pleased with their swim."

Keegan Reed of James Buchanan finished off a strong weekend with a ninth-place mark in the 100 breaststroke.

She swam a time of 1:12.73, which was over a half-second faster than her seed time and left her within 0.05 of the school record. On Friday night, Reed set a 10-year-old school record in the 200 IM (2:19.90).

JB coach Kathy Hall said, "Keegan did a great job at districts. Today she had her best time in the 100 breaststroke."

Greencastle-Antrim's Vincent Hall took 17th in the Class AA 100 breaststroke, while Ian Squires of Shippensburg and James Reeder of JB were 21st and 23rd, respectively, in the Class AA 100 free.

In the Class AA 100 backstroke, Clay Heebner was 23rd. The James Buchanan boys 400 free relay took 11th, dropping five seconds from their seed time.

Note: The Wilson boys (434 points) and girls (369) won the team titles in Class AAA, while the Hershey boys (617) and Muhlenberg girls (361.5) were victorious in Class AA competition.
