Central York boys' volleyball last YAIAA team standing after quarterfinal sweep

Members of Central York and La Salle College High School boys' volleyball teams had one thing in common coming into Saturday's PIAA Class 3A quarterfinal at Avon Grove High School.

They could count on one finger the number of state playoff games they won.

For La Salle College, it was the program's first state tournament win ... ever. For Central York, with seven state titles on their resume, it was just the first win for this group of players.

The difference in the programs showed Saturday, as the Panthers swept the Explorers 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) in less time than it took to get to or from the match.

Senior Mason Boyer led the Central attack with nine kills. Lance Shaffer fed the attack with 28 assists.

Next up is a meeting with District 7 champion Shaler, which defeated Canon McMillan in five games, in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Altoona High School.
