For the first time in nearly 17 years, Hanover will soon have an indoor facility for tennis.

The York-Adams Community Tennis Association, a nonprofit grassroots organization founded in 2004, has spent the past 10 years fundraising for a new facility that will begin construction in June. The facility will be located behind Emory H. Markle Intermediate School in the South Western School District and is expected to be open by October, according to YACTA director of programs and Delone Catholic tennis coach Denise Dunn.

The cost of the facility is about $900,000, which was raised through donations, fundraisers and galas since 2007, according to Dunn. YACTA has a 40-year leasing agreement with the South Western School District for the facility.

"We're trying to get people back into tennis and want to see the community support tennis in Hanover," Dunn said. "It's a public facility, and for the most part, anybody who wants to book a court can book it."

The facility will feature three tennis courts as well as three to four pickleball courts. There will also be a viewing area, which Dunn said is not expected to be completed by the time the facility opens in October.

While it will be a public facility, there will be small membership fees for both adults and junior members. The local high schools in the area will also have an agreement on what days each program is allowed to use the facility.

The last indoor tennis facility in Hanover closed in 2000. It was located behind Hanover High School.
