Phil Heinle works at one end of the ice while Jay Heinle patrols the other end for the Saint Mary's (Minnesota) men's hockey team. The twins from Dallastown have helped the team reach the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, which begins this weekend.

The Heinle twins are key performers for the Cardinals, who’ll take a 13-9-3 record into Saturday’s first-round game against Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Phil Heinle, a senior, is the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper. He has started 15 games and has a 7-5-3 record with a shutout. He’s given up 49 goals and has 399 saves.

Junior Jay Heinle, a forward, has 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points with two game-winners.

"The Heinle twins have been part of the foundation of our team,” coach Bill Moore said. “Both have earned All-Conference honors during their careers.”

Phil Heinle is third in saves (1,739), fourth in victories (31) and first in shutouts (four) during his career.

“Phil has consistently been one of top goalies in the conference,” Moore said. “His play in goal gives us a chance to win every night.”

Jay Heinle has scored 26 goals with 23 assists and four game-winners in his three seasons with the team.

“Jay is one of our captains and his leadership has helped to rejuvenate our hockey program to a status where we compete for playoff positions and championships every year,” Morris said. “And, he excels in the class room, leading our team in cumulative GPA. We will miss Phil after he graduates, but, at least we’ve got Jay for one more year.”
