York College men, women win CAC tourney openers

Red Lion's Morgan Kuehne score a team-high 18 points and Susquehannock's Katie Wagner added 16 points to help the York College women's basketball team win its first-round game in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday night. The fourth-seeded Spartans beat fifth-seeded Frostburg State, 72-62.

Kuehne and Wagner were among four Spartans to reach double-digits in scoring to offset a game-high 27-points effort off the bench from Frostburg's Sharyce Warren.

Sam Hruz added 10 points, and Sam Mocniak added 11 off the bench. West York's Sarah Shearer added eight points, and Dallastown's Katie McGowan added four.

York advances to Thursday's semifinal at top-seeded Christopher Newport. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Men, York 102, Wesley 91: The third-seed Spartans used a nine-point advantage in the second half to give themselves a little breathing room after taking a two-point edge into halftime.

Blayde Reich scored 28 points to lead six York players in double figures. Matt Scarmuffo added 16 points from his starting role and Zack Galic scored 15 points off the bench.

Central York graduate Jared Wagner and Spring Grove grad Darin Gordon each scored 14 points.

York will travel to Salisbury on Thursday to take on the second-seeded Sea Gulls at 7 p.m. Salisbury had a bye in the first round.
